Northwestern On The Wrong Side of Pitching Duel with Indiana

4/29/2016 5:52:00 PM | Baseball

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — It was a good old-fashioned pitching duel at Bart Kaufman Field on Friday afternoon with Indiana holding on to beat Northwestern, 2-1, in game one of a doubleheader.

Northwestern (10-31, 2-14 B1G) outhit Indiana (24-16, 9-4 B1G) in the contest, 10-5. It was the 21st time this season that the Wildcats have reached the 10-hit plateau. Northwestern had the leadoff man reach base in six of the nine innings.

Reed Mason (2-6) earned a quality start in the game, tossing 6.0 innings and only allowing two runs, while striking out three batters. Pete Hofman came in for relief in the seventh and retired six of the seven batters he faced. Hofman struck out two and allowed one hit.

Kyle Hart (9-2) picked up his ninth win of the season after going 6.2 innings, allowing one run on nine hits and striking out five. Thomas Bletcher picked up his seventh save for the Hoosiers.

The Wildcats had four players record a pair of hits, including Jack Dunn (2-for-3), Joe Hoscheit (2-for-4), Zach Jones (2-for-4) and Jake Schieber (2-for-4).

Northwestern got on the board in the first inning after Hoscheit drove in Dunn from third base with a Texas Leaguer single to right field to put the 'Cats in front, 1-0.

Indiana answered in the bottom half of the second inning with a pair of runs to take the lead, 2-1. The Hoosiers held Northwestern off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game.

Northwestern had the game-tying run on second base in the top of the ninth, but could not bring it around to the plate.

Joe Schindler (1-1) will make his third start of the season in the nightcap of the doubleheader.
