Eighth Inning Dooms Northwestern in Nightcap

4/29/2016 9:51:00 PM | Baseball

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana used a three-run eighth inning to tie the ballgame with Northwestern at 3-3, before the Wildcats committed an error in the bottom of the ninth to allow the Hoosiers to walk-off with a 4-3 win in game two of a doubleheader.

The pair of losses on the day drop Northwestern to 10-32 overall and 2-15 in the Big Ten, while Indiana improves to 25-16 on the campaign and 10-4 in league play.

Joe Schindler made his third start of the season for Northwestern and went 5.2 innings, allowing four hits and no runs, while striking out three batters. After allowing back-to-back singles in the first inning, Schindler went on to retire 15 consecutive batters until he surrendered a single in the sixth inning.

Tyler Lass (0-1) took the loss for Northwestern after working the final1.1 innings. Lass had one strike out.

Northwestern chased Indiana's starter Caleb Baragar out of the game after the fifth inning, tallying six hits and two runs off the Hoosiers' starter. Baragar struck out seven batters in the game.

Jake Kelzer (2-2) was Indiana's winning pitcher of record after tossing a perfect three-up, three-down ninth inning.

The Wildcats racked up nine hits in the game with Connor Lind and Grant Peikert each tallying a pair. Peikert finished the game with two RBIs, which matched a season-high.

Alex Krupa was a perfect 3-for-3 in the game for Indiana after entering as a pinch hitter.

Much like game one of the doubleheader, Northwestern got onto the scoreboard first. In the top of the second inning Lind and Jake Schieber singled to make it first and second, with two away, for Peikert, who roped a shot to right field to plate Lind and give NU an early 1-0 lead.

After a scoreless third inning, Jack Claeys singled to begin the frame and advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt. Peikert came to the plate one batter later and took a pitch to left field to score Claeys from second and collect his second RBI of the game.

Zeros populated the scoreboard for the next three innings until Matt Hopfner singled and Lind doubled down the right field line to put runners in scoring position. Claeys launched a ball to right field that was deep enough to bring home Lind and make it a 3-0 game.

Indiana broke up Northwestern's shutout in the bottom of the eighth off Brian Wilhite's inside-the-park home run. The Hoosiers went on to knot the game at 3-3 off an RBI-double by Craig Dedelow and a sacrifice fly by Austin Cangelosi.

Jake Stolley, Josh Davis and Richard Fordon all made relief appearances for Northwestern.

In the bottom of the ninth, with the game still tied at 3-3, Lass got a pair of outs from a fly ball to left field and ground out to short, before allowing consecutive singles that eventually put runners on second and third.

Lass forced Indiana's Craig Dedelow to roll a ground ball to Zach Jones at first base, but an error on Jones trying to make a play at the bag allowed Dedelow to reach safely and the winning run to come home for the Hoosiers.

The series finale between the two teams is tentatively scheduled for 3:05 p.m. CT tomorrow, Saturday, April 30. Tommy Bordignon will make the first start of his career for Northwestern.
