Hoscheit's Grand Slam Not Enough as 'Cats Fall to Indiana, 7-6

5/1/2016 2:13:00 PM | Baseball

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Joe Hoscheit launched a grand slam in the top of the seventh inning to give Northwestern a 6-5 lead, but a two-run inning by Indiana in the bottom of the frame would give the Hoosiers a 7-6 win in the series finale.

Northwestern (10-33, 2-16 B1G) received multiple-hit performances from Matt Hopfner (2-for-5, RBI) and Hoscheit (2-for-4, 4 RBI). The win propelled Indiana to 26-16 overall and 11-4 in Big Ten play.

Pete Hofman (1-4) earned the loss for Northwestern after pitching 1.1 innings. The junior allowed two runs, both unearned, in the bottom of the seventh to become the pitcher of record. Tommy Bordignon made the first start of his collegiate career and went 3.0 innings, giving up three runs on five hits and striking out two.

Jake Kelzer (3-2) was the winning pitcher of record for Indiana. Kelzer entered the contest from the bullpen in the seventh and worked the final three frames.

Jack Dunn, Connor Lind, Jack Claeys, Jake Schieber and Ben Dickey each recorded hits in the game.

Indiana took advantage of Austin Cangelosi's lead-off triple in the bottom of the second inning. Following the three-bagger to right center, Luke Miller brought home the game's first run with a ground ball to Dunn at short and gave Indiana the 1-0 lead.

In the top of the third inning, the Hoosiers strung together a pair of singles to put runners on for Scotty Bradley, who took a pitch to the right field wall and cleared the bases to give the home team a 3-0 lead.

Northwestern got on to the board in the top of the fifth inning when Schieber tripled to the right field gap and Dickey scored him in the next at-bat with a ground out to short to cut into the lead, 3-1.  Dunn doubled in the next at-bat to try and continue the rally, but the Wildcats left Dunn stranded on base.

After allowing Indiana to score a pair of runs on two hits in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-1 lead, Northwestern answered in the top of the seventh with five runs to take its first lead of the day, 6-5.

Dickey and Dunn were hit by pitches and Zach Jones took a walk to start the seventh and load the bases for Matt Hopfner, who hit an RBI single up the middle to make it 6-2. With the bases loaded, Hoscheit took a called strike before unloading a pitch over the right field wall for a grand slam.

The home run was Hoscheit's sixth of the season and 13th of his career.

Northwestern's lead would not last. Indiana retook control of the game, 7-6, in the bottom half of the seventh by scoring two runs on two Northwestern errors. .

The #B1GCats went three up, three down in their final two at-bats to fall by a final score of 7-6.

Dan Kubiuk, Cooper Wetherbee, Justin Yoss, Mack Rosman and Richard Fordon all made relief appearances for the Wildcats.

Northwestern will be back in action on Wednesday, May 4, when it makes the trip across town to play at UIC. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. CT.
