EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern continued its dominant play this season with a 4-1 victory over No. 21 Michigan Friday night at the Combe Tennis Center. The 15th-ranked Wildcats improved to 8-0 in Big Ten play.

Chicago's Big Ten Team moved to 22-2 on the season and remained unbeaten at home with a 13-0 record in Evanston. Northwestern is one win away from tying the all-time program record of 23, set in 1983.

"We played with a lot of energy in doubles and really throughout the entire match," head coach Arvid Swan said. "All the matches were close, but it was good to see the top of the lineup get points for us."

The Wildcats came out firing early and raced to the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Konrad Zieba and Sam Shropshire took their set 6-4 at No. 2 to earn their 13th win of the season before Mihir Kumar and Alp Horoz won 6-3 in front of a loud grandstand at No. 3.

Northwestern then raced through singles play behind support from 312 fans, the second largest crowd at Combe this season.

"I'm extremely grateful to the folks coming out," Swan said. "It's incredible to have such support. It makes a huge difference in terms of our performance."

Shropshire added the first singles point for the Wildcats with a quick 6-2, 6-3 dismantling of the 93rd-ranked Jathan Malik. The win was the 16th of the season for No. 41 Shropshire.

Ben Vandixhorn made it 3-0 a few minutes later when he finished a 6-4, 6-3 defeat of Davis Crocker at No. 6. Vandixhorn has racked up 19 wins in his freshman season.

Michigan picked up its lone point of the day at No. 5, but Konrad Zieba closed out the match by breaking 112nd-ranked Alex Knight and serving an ace for the final point to take the match at No. 1, 6-3, 7-5.

The 15th-ranked Zieba earned his 19th win of the season and his 14th over a ranked opponent.

Chicago's Big Ten Team will go for its record-tying win on Sunday against Michigan State at noon. The Senior Day match will be held outdoors at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center. Mihir Kumar and Fedor Baev will be honored in a pre-match ceremony.
