EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern hosts its final regular season homestand of the season this weekend by welcoming No. 21 Michigan on Friday and Michigan State on Sunday. Both are scheduled to be held at the Combe Tennis Center, but Sunday's Senior Day match could be moved outdoors to the Vandy Christie Tennis Center.
No. 15 Northwestern (21-2, 7-0) will look to match the program record for wins in a season, which is 23, set in 1983.
Promotions
The fraternity with the most members in attendance at Friday's match against Michigan will receive a free 50" TV courtesy of Abt. Free t-shirts will be given out at Friday's match to all who attend.
As always, free pizza will be served at both matches.
Last Time Out
Northwestern continued its historical season with dominating road wins over Big Ten foes Nebraska (4-1) and Iowa (4-0) last weekend. With the win over Iowa, the Wildcats clinched their best regular season winning percentage in program history.
The Wildcats
Chicago's Big Ten Team has defeated their previous six opponents by a combined margin of 24-1. Northwestern's "Big Three" of Konrad Zieba, Sam Shropshire and Strong Kirchheimer have not lost in that span. As a result, the trio ranks 15th, 41st and 73rd, respectively, in the most recent ITA rankings.
Northwestern came in 15th in the ITA team ranking this week. The Wildcats remain the second highest ranked Big Ten team, trailing only No. 3 Ohio State, whom they will face on April 22. The 'Cats and Buckeyes are both currently unbeaten in Big Ten play.
Scouting Michigan
The 21st-ranked Wolverines feature a pair of players ranked in the ITA top 125. Jathan Malik (93) and Alex Knight (112) will likely take on Konrad Zieba and Sam Shropshire in Friday's match. Malik has earned his No. 93 ranking despite having an 8-9 record in dual play this year. All nine of his losses have come to an opponent's number one player.
The Wolverines' success has been mainly due to their depth. Carter Lin and Runhao Hua normally play in the third and fourth slots for Michigan, and the two have a 23-5 combined record in dual play this season. Michigan as a team also has a combined 32-7 record in the fifth and sixth slots.
Scouting Michigan State
Michigan State is 10-14 on the year, and the Spartans have yet to win a Big Ten match. They have dropped each of their last eight, and they will make a visit to No. 17 Illinois Friday before coming to Evanston Sunday. Michael Dube has been a bright spot for Michigan State. His 12-9 record in dual play stands as the best for the Spartans this year.
History
Both the Wolverines and the Spartans are familiar foes for Northwestern. Michigan holds a 69-26-1 advantage in the all-time series, while Northwestern has won 49 of its 75 all-time matches against Michigan State.
Northwestern has held the advantage recently, beating both squads in the past two seasons.
Next
The Wildcats wrap up the regular season with road matches against 3rd-ranked Ohio State on April 22nd and No. 39 Penn State on April 24th.
