EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern tied a single-season program record with its 23rd win on Sunday, beating Michigan State on Senior Day, 4-0. The last time the Wildcats won 23 matches in a season was 1983.

The win was the ninth in a row for the 15th-ranked Wildcats. Northwestern (23-2, 9-0) has outscored its opponents 36-4 during the streak.

"The guys are performing at a high level," head coach Arvid Swan said. "Our goals are still ahead of us, and we want to finish strong."

Playing outside at home for just the second time this year, Northwestern jumped out to an early advantage with the doubles point. The Wildcats got a 6-1 win at No. 2 from Konrad Zieba and Sam Shropshire, and they were followed by Mihir Kumar and Alp Horoz, who clinched the point with a 6-2 win at No. 3. Kumar and Horoz won their 17th match, which ranks seventh in program history.

Chicago's Big Ten Team rolled through singles play with Zieba picking up a dominant win at No. 1. The Northwestern junior earned his 20th win of the season with a straight set shutout of Mac Roy.

He was followed by Kumar, who, playing his final regular season home match, just missed a shutout, winning 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6. Strong Kirchheimer then put the finishing touches on the Wildcat victory with a 6-1, 6-1 decision at No. 3. The win was Kirchheimer's team-leading 25th of the season.

Northwestern finished off a perfect season at home with the win. The Wildcats went 14-0 in matches played in Evanston.

Northwestern recognized seniors Fedor Baev and Mihir Kumar in a pre-match ceremony.

"They are just two terrific players, number one," head coach Arvid Swan said. "They are great people for our team on and off the court. Both guys came in and took a chance on our program and made a huge impact."

The Big Ten regular season championship will be decided Friday night in Columbus, Ohio when Northwestern visits Ohio State at 6 p.m. Both teams enter that match a perfect 9-0 in Big Ten play. The Wildcats will then finish the regular season with a match at Penn State on Sunday afternoon.
