Northwestern now is 16-20 overall, 7-4 in the Big Ten after the win. Illinois is 23-17, 3-8 in the conference. NU captured game one of the double-dip, 12-6, after plating eight runs in the seventh inning to open up an otherwise tight tilt.
The Wildcats now return home to welcome back all five of their Women's College World Series teams during the April 15-17 Nebraska series with a major ceremony planned for Saturday, April 16. Grab single game tickets or passes for the rest of the season here!

Northwestern picked up in game two right where it left off in game one following an eight-run seventh, plating the nightcap's first two runs in the top of the first. Sabrina Rabin led off with a single and stole second before Morgan Nelson joined her on base via a walk. Andrea Filler then stepped to the plate and split right field, sending a two-run triple to the fence to stake the Wildcats to an early 2-0 edge.
Illinois capitalized on an early Northwestern error in the bottom of the first to eventually score a run on an RBI groundout, cutting the Wildcats lead in half, 2-1. NU turned an inning-ending double play to finish off an Illinois threat in the second, but the Illini came back with another RBI groundout in the third to knot the score, 2-2.
In between all of that, Northwestern nearly added to its lead in the top of the third. With Filler (single) and Amy Letourneau (hit by pitch) aboard, Alcy Bush CRUSHED a line drive to left that the fielder was perfectly positioned to reach up and snare as it flew past her, ending the inning.
NU did score in the fourth to regain its lead. Brooke Marquez led off with a first-pitch single to left, moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on a productive Fran Strub groundout. Krista Williams then put a ball in play that took a nasty hop up off the body of the shortstop, allowing Marquez to break for the plate and slide around a throw for a 3-2 NU lead.
Yet again, Illinois has a response in the bottom half. After scoring immediately following an NU score three times in game one, the Illini did so for the second time in game two in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out single, tying the game, 3-3.
After Illinois' Allie Bauch made two diving catches at second base to rob two Wildcats' hits in a 1-2-3 top of the fifth, NU starter Kenzie Ellis gritted her way through the bottom half, going to full counts on two batters and winning both battles as part of a 1-2-3 inning of her own.
In the bottom of the sixth, Illinois got a leadoff home run to take a 4-3 lead, setting the stage for another Northwestern comeback attempt in the seventh inning.
Williams started the inning with a single through the right side of the infield before Rabin dropped down a bunt so good, she was safe at first on the sacrifice attempt. Nelson followed with a bunt of her own that did end up being a sacrifice, pushing Williams to third and Rabin to second.
Filler came to the plate and came through again, roping a two-run double to the fence in left field to put Northwestern back on top in the contest, 5-4, before Letourneau singled to bring Filler home for a two-run edge.
In the bottom of the seventh, the leadoff batter singled against Ellis, leading to Letourneau entering the circle in relief after getting a complete-game victory in the first contest. Letourneau retired all three batters she faced to shut the door.
Filler had three hits and four RBIs to lead NU at the plate. Rabin singled twice and scored twice while Letourneau had two base knocks for the Wildcats.
Ellis (6-5) picked up the win, going six-plus innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits and three walks with four strikeouts. Letourneau tossed the final frame for her second save of the year.
