IOWA CITY, Iowa – No. 13 Northwestern won its seventh in a row to improve to 21-2 with a 4-0 shutout at Iowa on Sunday afternoon. It was the fifth shutout for the Wildcats in the last six matches.
Chicago's Big Ten Team beat the No. 63 Hawkeyes to run its conference record to a perfect 7-0.
"Great two road wins for us against quality Big Ten competition this weekend," head coach Arvid Swan said. "Winning on the road is difficult, so I am proud of our effort today. Iowa is a good team, and we had to play a complete match to get the win."
Strong Kirchheimer was nothing short of dominant, posting a 6-0, 6-0 straight set shutout over Robin Haden at No. 3. The win was Kirchheimer's eighth in a row, and he is now 24-3 overall with an 18-1 dual record in 2016.
"Strong is an elite college player and continues to get better every day," Swan said. "His work ethic and competitiveness are so good, and he goes 100 percent in every practice and match. His serve has been a major difference maker this year, but every aspect of his game has improved."
Fedor Baev got his first Big Ten win of the season with a 6-2, 6-2 decision at No. 4 that put the Wildcats up 3-0. Ben Vandixhorn then finished things off for Chicago's Big Ten Team for the fourth straight match with a win at No. 5. The freshman improved to 18-5 with his win.
Northwestern led in each of the three singles matches that went unfinished.
The Wildcats won doubles with a pair of 6-3 wins at Nos. 1 and 3. Baev and Kirchheimer won their team-leading 17th doubles match with the victory at No. 1, while Mihir Kumar and Alp Horoz continued their strong season, moving to 15-3 with the win at No. 3.
Northwestern is 19-0 this season when it wins the doubles point.
Chicago's Big Ten Team returns home next weekend for a big matchup Friday night at the Combe Tennis Center. The Wildcats host No. 21 Michigan at 6 p.m. The team will also welcome Michigan State to Evanston on Sunday for a noon matchup.
