Wildcats in Sixth Place After Day One of Big Ten Championships

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Northwestern sits in sixth place with 92 points after the first day of the 2016 Big Ten Men's Swimming & Diving Championships, hosted at Purdue's Boilermaker Aquatic Center.

Day one of competition featured a pair of relay events with the 200-yard medley and the 800-yard free.

In the 200-medley relay, Northwestern's foursome of Nick Petersen, Will Hofstadter, Arjun Sharma and Almog Olshtein placed sixth with a time of 1:26.50. Not only was the time the fastest Northwestern has posted all season, but the group also became the fifth-fastest 200-medley relay team in program history.

After swimming the 200-medley relay, Hofstadter teamed up with Anthony Marcantonio, Andy Jovanovic and Gage Kohner to pick up 44 points for the Wildcats with an eighth-place finish in the 800-free relay. Their time of 6:29.57 makes them the fifth-fastest 800-free relay team in school history.

On Thursday, The Championships will feature the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free and the 1-meter diving events.

Northwestern will be represented by Stephen Shull, Jonathan Lieberman and Carter Page in the 500 free, while Ryan Tate, Justin Hanson, Tyler Lis and Marcantonio will compete in the 200 IM.

Page and Marcantonio own the season's top times for Northwestern in the 500 free (4:31.91) and the 200 IM (1:49.41), respectively.

Eight Wildcats will participate in the preliminary rounds for the 50 free, including Olshtein who swam a Northwestern top time of 20.41 in the event against Iowa on Jan. 23.

New this season at the Big Ten Championships is a revised-scoring format in which qualifiers for the C finals of the swimming events will also account for team points. Divers that finish 17th through 24th place in the preliminary rounds will also account for team points. Only A & B finals (championship & consolation) will be contested in the diving events.
