'Cats Conclude Nonconference Play With Two Home Games

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern wraps up the nonconference portion of its schedule this week when it hosts a pair of games at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Wildcats square off with IUPUI at 7 p.m. Tuesday before concluding the pre-Big Ten portion of their schedule at 7 p.m. Thursday when they host Houston Baptist.
NU (9-2) has won its last 16 games in the month of December. The 'Cats won their last four December games in 2014 before going 8-0 in the month last year and 4-0 so far this year. Northwestern has won its last 19 nonconference home games dating back to December 2014.
The Wildcats are coming off a narrow 67-64 win over Dayton at United Center in Chicago on Saturday. Sanjay Lumpkin posted a double-double to lead NU, recording 14 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. Northwestern held the Flyers to 4-of-28 shooting (14.3 percent) in the first half in surging out to a 40-17 halftime lead.
Northwestern is receiving votes in this week's Associated Press poll for the first time this season. The Wildcats picked up four votes, the 34th most of any team.
NU head coach Chris Collins coached against IUPUI head coach Jason Gardner in the championship game of the 2001 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament when Collins was an assistant coach at Duke and Gardner played for Arizona. Duke won, 82-72, with Gardner posting 7 points.
Northwestern and IUPUI have split two previous meetings, both in Evanston. The Wildcats won the most recent matchup, 63-61, on Nov. 22, 2013 on JerShon Cobb's basket with 2.3 seconds left.
Meanwhile, NU has won its only previous meeting with Houston Baptist, notching a 65-58 victory in Evanston Nov. 14, 2014.
Scouting IUPUI
The Jaguars (5-7) have topped 100 points in each of their last two games, most recently winning 101-81 at Southern Utah on Saturday. Matt O'Leary connected on 8 of 9 field goal attempts in scoring 20 points. IUPUI shot 60.3 percent from the field and hit 13 3-pointers. Darell Combs leads the team with an average of 17.5 points per game while O'Leary contributes 14.8 per contest. Combs, O'Leary and Ron Patterson each have hit at least 22 3-pointers this season.
Scouting Houston Baptist
The Huskies (4-5) will be seeking their first road win of the season in six tries. Houston Baptist notched a 103-77 victory against Arlington Baptist in its most recent game last Saturday. Colton Lasher paced the team with 28 points while Reveal Chukwujekwu posted 21 points and 14 rebounds. Lasher leads the Huskies with an average of 15.3 points per game.
