EVANSTON, Ill. – Fresh off a victory over No. 22/21 Texas on Monday night, Northwestern battles Notre Dame for the Legends Classic title Tuesday in Brooklyn. Tip time is set for 5 p.m. Central time with ESPN2 providing television coverage and 720 WGN broadcasting the game on the radio.
Northwestern (3-1) is seeking its first in-season tournament title since winning the 2012 South Padre Island Invitational.
The Wildcats advanced to Tuesday's championship game with a 77-58 win over No. 22/21 Texas on Monday. Bryant McIntosh led NU with 20 points while Scottie Lindsey added 16. Northwestern held the Longhorns to 37.3 percent shooting from the field. The win was the first for the 'Cats over a ranked team since a 65-56 win at No. 14 Wisconsin Jan. 29, 2014.
Sophomore center Dererk Pardon recorded 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Wildcats, marking the second double-double of his career.
Notre Dame is Northwestern's most often played nonconference opponent with the teams having met 88 times. However, the teams have met only once since 1984 when the 'Cats defeated No. 23 Notre Dame 72-58 on Nov. 27, 2009 in the semifinal round of the Chicago Invitational Challenge. NU has won three of its last four meetings with the Fighting Irish.
Northwestern head coach Chris Collins was recruited as a player to Duke by Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey when he was an assistant on the Blue Devils' staff.
Scouting Notre Dame
The Fighting Irish (4-0) held off Colorado 89-83 Monday night to advance to the Legends Classic title game. Bonzie Colson, who leads the team with averages of 20.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per game, posted 22 points and 12 rebounds to pace Notre Dame. VJ Beachem contributes 19.0 points per contest. The team is averaging 88.2 points and 10.3 steals per game while shooting 86.6 percent from the free throw line. Notre Dame is coming off an NCAA Elite Eight appearance a year ago and is currently receiving votes in both major national polls.
