BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Freshman Lily Katzman scored a goal, but No. 6 Northwestern saw its eight-match winning streak come to an end with a 2-1 loss at Indiana Friday afternoon.
The Wildcats out-shot the Hoosiers, 20-11, but a second-half goal by IU off a penalty corner was the difference.
Indiana struck first at the 17:51 mark when Ciara Girouard scored off a penalty corner to give the hosts the lead. Northwestern put the pressure on the Hoosiers defense throughout the first half and the 'Cats eventually got the equalizer when Katzman got behind Hoosier goalie Noelle Rother at the post and scored to make it 1-1 22:06.
The Wildcats out-shot Indiana 15-5 over the opening 35 minutes of play but were only able to come away with the one goal as Rother made eight first-half saves.
Northwestern had a great chance to take the lead seven minutes into the second half when Puck Pentenga and Saar de Breij recorded back-to-back shots on goal, but Rother made consecutive saves to keep the game tied. The Hoosiers got the eventual game-winner off another penalty corner at 48:57 when Nora Aucker scored and NU never was able to get the tying goal.
The Wildcats (10-3, 4-1 B1G) return to action at noon Sunday when they travel to No. 8 Louisville.
