LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- No. 8 Louisville got a goal in each half to edge sixth-ranked Northwestern 2-0 Sunday afternoon in a top-10 battle at Trager Stadium.
The loss drops the Wildcats to 10-4 overall (4-1 B1G).
The Cardinals got on the board first with a goal at 7:05 when a pass by Bethany Russ from outside the circle deflected off Nicole Woods and redirected into the goal to put the hosts in front.
Northwestern notched the only two penalty corners of the first half but they were unable to convert. The 'Cats held a 4-3 edge in shots over the opening 35 minutes of play.
Louisville would get an insurance goal at 54:03 when Taylor Stone scored off a penalty corner. Northwestern appeared to get on the board and cut the deficit in half a minute later as Dominique Masters pass to Pascale Massey was redirected past Ayeisha McFerran. However, the play went to a video review and the goal was taken off the board.
Northwestern pulled goalie Lindsay von der Luft for an extra attacker for the 5:27 of regulation, but the Wildcats were unable to rally.
The 'Cats return to action at 3 p.m. Friday when they host Iowa at Lakeside Field.
