10/14/2016 7:56:00 PM | Men's Soccer

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Mattias Tomasino scored the golden goal in the 100th minute to give Northwestern a 2-1 overtime victory versus Rutgers Friday night.

The goal was Tomasino's first of his career.

The Wildcats were in the overtime period thanks to Brandon Medina, who blasted home a volley in the 88th minute to equalize the contest at 1-1 and force overtime.

"The guys played hard and played together, said head coach Tim Lenahan." "Great to see Brandon Medina make such a big play after struggling with injuries. Mattias picked a great time to score his first college goal. We will enjoy this victory and get ready for a great Notre Dame team on Tuesday at Toyota Park."

The win sends Northwestern to 3-9-1 overall and 2-3-1 in Big Ten play. With the victory also comes a clinch for a berth in the Big Ten Conference tournament.

Rutgers drops to 0-10-2 on the campaign and 0-5-2 in league action.

Northwestern applied pressure on the offensive end early, tallying a corner kick and four shots in the opening 12 minutes, but Rutgers would get on the board first when Jason Wright tallied his fourth goal of the season in the 24th minute to give the Scarlet Knights a 1-0 lead.

The Wildcats were aggressive for the remainder of the opening stanza, putting nine shots on the board with five of them coming on net.

Francisco Tomasino played all 100 minutes in net for the Wildcats and made three saves on 16 shots faced.

Towards the ends of the second half Northwestern had a flurry of chances and played predominantly in Rutgers' back third, before Medina scored his third goal of the season.

He now has a team-best seven points in the campaign on three goals and an assist.

M. Tomasino's game-winning goal was set up in the 100th minute when by Camden Buescher crossed a ball to the far post. The pass found a scrum of players, but Tomasino was there to finish off the pass. Mike Roberge was also credited with an assist on the play.

Buescher and Roberge lead with the Wildcats with three assists a piece on the season.

Friday's night contest was physical match with six yellow cards being assessed during the 100 minutes of action.

Northwestern will have a quick turn around as they get set to host No. 2 Notre Dame at Toyota Park on Tuesday, Oct. 18. The contest will begin at 7 p.m.
