Northwestern Unable to Convert Late Chances Against UIC

10/11/2016 9:47:00 PM | Men's Soccer

Evanston, Ill.—  Northwestern outshot UIC by a 12-5 margin in the second half, but was not able to find the back of the net as the Wildcats fell to the Flames, 2-0, in non-conference action.

Northwestern moves to 2-9-1 on the campaign, while UIC rises to 5-5-3.

Braden Thurasingham made a pair of saves, as well as a trio of punches in his first career start in goal.

Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium was treated to a flurry of early strikes from UIC, as the Flames looked to test Thurasingham, who had played just 12 minutes in two career games. But the Wildcat defense held resolute, allowing only long distance chances, and no shots on goal for 35 minutes.

Northwestern almost found the opener when Elo Ozumba's header from a Drew Rosenberg cross just carried over the bar in the 21st minute. UIC would find the breakthrough on the game's first shot on goal, when Oscar Rivero headed in a 26th-minute corner.

Northwestern controlled the half from then out, with Shannon Seymour's free kick in the 41st minute their best chance, but the 'Cats couldn't draw equal.

The second half started much like the first ended, with Northwestern pushing for a goal. Ozumba was brought down in the box, while one-on-one with the keeper in the 51st minute, but was denied a penalty.

Northwestern had a slew of chances in the 55th minute, starting with Mike Roberge's shot being carried wide. Ozumba won the ensuing cross, with his header beating the keeper, but clanged off the post, then off the back of the keeper and out for a corner. Roberge then got his head to the corner, but his glancing effort also went wide.

With the Wildcats pressing forwards, UIC found a gap in the 63rd minute, as Nestor Garcia was able to slot a long range strike inside the post.

The #B1GCats had chances to claw back, with a pair of corner's cleared off the goal line, and Matt Moderwell's long distance chip landed on the top netting in the 89th minute, as Northwestern fell 2-0.

The Wildcats return to action on Friday, Oct. 14, traveling to Piscataway, N.J., to face Rutgers. Northwestern will be back in Chicago on Tuesday Oct. 18, facing Notre Dame at Toyota Park for a 7 p.m. start.
