Wildcats Head to San Diego for Western Invitational

EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern fencing heads to San Diego, Calif. for the Western Invititational on Sunday to take on members of the Western Fencing Conference. The duals will take place at the RIMAC Arena, home to UC San Diego's basketball and volleyball teams, beginning at 10 a.m. CT.
Northwestern starts the day bright and early against UC San Diego at 10 a.m. followed by Stanford at 11 am. The 'Cats face off against Caltech and Vassar at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., respectively, before finishing off the day against Air Force at 3:30 p.m.
The Wildcats are coming off a competitive weekend at the North American Cup in St. Louis, Mo. Standout performances came from Juliana Barrett and Courtney Dumas in the Women's Epee group as well as Stephanie Chan in the Women's Foil group. Dumas finished with a 6-2 record for a top-40 finish while Barrett finished in 26th with a 7-2 record. Chan also achieved a 40th place finish.
The senior Dumas leads the team's epee group with a .917 winning percentage and a 33-3 record this season. Junior Mandeep Bhinder also holds an impressive record of 30-9 for .769 winning percentage. In the foil group, sophomore Stefani Kahookele has a record of 13-5 on the season followed by senior Charlotte Sands with a 12-5 record. Of the 'Cats in the sabre group, sophomore Sacha Bazzal has a notable .933 winning percentage with a 14-1 record on the season. Junior Alisha Gomez-Shah and sophomore Emine Yücel hold winning percentages of .875 (21-3) and .857 (18-3) respectively.
Northwestern is ranked sixth in the country and has a 17-4 record heading into the second half of the season.
