Northwestern Sweeps Western Invitational

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Northwestern dominated the competition at the Western Invitational in San Diego over the weekend, posting a perfect 5-0 mark. The Wildcats won 105 total bouts and dropped just 30.
 
Chicago's Big Ten Team, ranked fifth nationally, improved to 22-4 on the season.
 
Epee led the way for Northwestern, posting a combined 38-7 record to lead all weapons groups in winning percentage. The Wildcats' foil team was the only other weapon group in the competition to post just single-digit losses. The foil squad was 36-9 and posted 9-0 shutouts against Stanford and Cal Tech. The sabre team won 31 matches in the event.
 
Northwestern opened the day against UC-San Diego and won the team's closest bout of the day, 17-10. The Wildcats then took the strips against Stanford and dominated, 20-7. After a round off, Chicago's Big Ten Team came back and crushed Cal Tech, 26-1, before moving on to beat Vassar and Air Force by matching 21-6 scores.
 
The Wildcats next head to Philadelphia, Pa. on Saturday, Jan. 23 for the ultra-competitive Penn Duals.
