Box Score
EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern made it a clean sweep in its Sunday doubleheader with a 4-0 win over crosstown foe UIC in the nightcap at the Combe Tennis Center.
Â
The 20th-ranked Wildcats have now won eight matches in a row and are 11-1.
Â
That mark is the best start to a season since 1988-89. That team won 12 of its first 13 matches, which stands as the best start in program history. This year's team will try to match that record on Thursday.
Â
"It's a good group," head coach Arvid Swan said. "They put in the time on and off the court, and we just have to keep getting better."
Â
Northwestern cruised to the doubles point, winning at Nos. 2 and 3 to put up the first team point. Mihir Kumar and Alp Horoz moved up a spot from their usual No. 3 position and clinched the point with a 6-3 win at No. 2. Their win followed one by Konrad Zieba and Michael Lorenzini, who picked up a 6-4 decision at No. 3.
Â
Singles went fast with wins at Nos. 1, 3 and 6 in straight sets. Northwestern outscored UIC 36-6 on those courts. No. 14 Zieba provided the clinching point with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 1. Fedor Baev was a winner on No. 3 and Kumar, playing his first singles match of the dual season, dominated at No. 6.
Â
"We just came out and played hard," Swan said. "If we compete in all spots, we are a tough out."
Â
The Wildcats had leads in all three of the matches that went unfinished.
Â
Northwestern's biggest test yet comes in the form of No. 3 TCU on Thursday. The Horned Frogs visit Evanston for a 6 p.m. start at the Combe Tennis Center.
