ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The Northwestern men's soccer program was unable to carry the momentum from back-to-back wins into Michigan Saturday and suffered its first Big Ten loss of the season in shutout fashion, 3-0.
The Wildcats had won back-to-back games against Ohio State and UCF at Toyota Park, their home for the 2015 season, but were unable to find any rhythm offensively as they managed just three shots on goal in the loss.
Senior Zak Allen made a career-high eight saves between the pipes, but Michigan had chance after chance with 28 shots (11 on goal), making Allen's job even more difficult.
The Wolverines took the lead early on when Francis Atuahene scored his fourth goal of the season in the 9th minute on an assist from Will Blair-Mellors. The Maize and Blue extended the lead 27 minutes later when again Blair-Mellors dished out an assist, this time to Michael Kapitula for his first goal of the season.
The Wildcats took just four shots in the first half - two on goal - and trailed, 2-0.
Northwestern nearly cut the deficit in half just six minutes into the second half when senior Joey Calistri put a header on net off a corner kick from freshman Camden Buescher, but Evan Louro made his third and final save of the afternoon. A bit of back-and-forth followed the save, resulting in yellow cards to Michigan's Billy Stevens and Northwestern's Mike Roberge.
Michigan closed the scoring in the 89th minute when Colin McAtee scored his first goal of the season on an assist from Atuahene.
Chicago's Big Ten is back in action this Wednesday when it takes on UIC at Flames Field. Opening kick is scheduled for 7 p.m.
