Wildcats Win Double-OT Thriller at UIC, 2-1
9/23/2015 9:56:00 PM | Men's Soccer
EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern played resilient soccer and despite an early deficit came back to defeat UIC at Flames Field in double overtime on Wednesday night, 2-1.
The Flames took a 1-0 lead in the first half, but a second-half goal by senior Henry Herrill tied the game, 1-1. Sophomore Elo Ozumba finally gave the Wildcats the win at the 103:29 mark with his first career goal.
"Great result for us," head coach Tim Lenahan said. "We battled. We gave up the goal on a set piece. They were all over us on set pieces all night. Obviously, Sammy plays a great ball to Elo. We knew starting the second half we were going to have to press a little bit. The way this game was going, both teams were having trouble to defend the set pieces. We were pretty resilient. They had some good chances and obviously any time it's an overtime game there is a lot of pressure and Elo made a huge play."
With the victory, the Wildcats improve to 3-3-1 on the season heading into a key Big Ten matchup against Indiana on Sunday at Toyota Park. The Wildcats are 1-1-0 in Big Ten play.
WINNER, WINNER, CHICKEN DINNER
They've been waiting; waiting for sophomore Elo Ozumba to get his first career goal. Ozumba found the back of the net in the 104th minute for his career goal and game winner to give the Wildcats their 2-1 win.
"We've been waiting a long time for him to get his first goal," Lenahan said. "In overtime to get it at UIC for a big win… pretty good time for him to get the first one."
Ozumba was a Freshman All-Big Ten selection last season, but had yet to find the back of the net. He finished last season with four assists, but tonight it was a perfectly placed ball – both in space and time – from classmate Sam Forsgren that sprung Ozumba free and gave him a 1-on-1 with the goalkeeper.
With a quick move to his left, Ozumba beat the keeper and buried the game winner in the back of the net.
THE EQUALIZER
Down 1-0 and just about 25 minutes left in regulation, the Wildcats finally got their equalizer from senior Henry Herrill. A long throw from freshman Jake Roberge on a set piece came to senior Nathan Dearth, who found Herrill in the box.
With the goalkeeper out of position, Herrill sent a shot right down the middle to tie the game at the 64:52 mark, 1-1.
CLOSE ONLY COUNTS IN HORSESHOES
Senior Joey Calistri nearly gave the Wildcats the lead in the 16th minute with what would have been his third goal of the season, but his shot hit the crossbar and the far post before being corralled in the box by sophomore Sam Forsgren.
With what appeared to be a wide open net, Forsgren took another shot only for a UIC defender to make a defensive save and keeping the 'Cats off the board.
UP NEXT
The Wildcats take on Indiana on Sunday at Toyota Park. The game will be part of a doubleheader with the Northwestern women's soccer program that plays Rutgers at noon. The men will kick at 3 p.m.
"We've gotta get our legs back," Lenahan said. "This was a big game. We're getting ready for Indiana now. We're talking about a premier program in the history of college soccer coming into town and Toyota Park. It should be a fun one."
