No. 10 Wildcats Dominate Northeastern for First Win, 4-1

EVANSTON, Ill. β The tenth-ranked Northwestern field hockey dominated visiting Northeastern at Lakeside Field Sunday to pick up its first win of the 2015 campaign, 4-1.

The Wildcats (1-1) dominated possession for much of the first 20 minutes, but were unable to get on the board until junior Isabel Flens scored her first goal of the season in the 28thΒ minute. Flens' goal came on assists from seniors Lisa McCarthy and Charlotte Martin on what would be the first of three penalty corner conversions for the Wildcats.

Northwestern finished the first half with an 11-0 advantage in shots, putting seven on goal. They were unable to extend the lead in the first half however as the Huskies' (0-2) Becky Garner made six of her 10 saves in the first 35 minutes.

The 'Cats took advantage of a penalty corner again in the 49th minute when Flens returned a pass to McCarthy at the bottom of the cage for her first goal of the year.

The Huskies were able to cut the lead to 2-1 with just under 10 minutes to play when June Curry-Lindahl scored on a penalty corner, but Flens quickly thwarted any chance of a comeback.

The junior took a touch from Martin at the top of the circle off a penalty corner and fired a shot past the keeper to her left side for her second goal of the game a 3-1 lead.

Chicago's Big Ten Team then needed just 29 seconds to extend the lead to three as senior Caroline Troncelliti worked her way to the end line and found a slashing Dominique Masters in the middle for the final 4-1 tally.

Northwestern finished the afternoon with a 20-4 advantage in shots and 10-3 advantage in penalty corners. Sophomore Lindsay von der Luft made a pair of saves to pick up her first win of the year in the cage.
