Flens tallies third goal of the year for Wildcats

LANCASTER, Pa. -- No. 10 Northwestern was edged by its second top-5 opponent of the season Friday evening as No. 5 Duke scored twice in the last five minutes of the match to clip the Wildcats 2-1 as part of the B1G/ACC Cup.

The contest was a rematch of a second-round NCAA tournament matchup from a year ago won by Duke, 2-1, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

The Wildcats continued their challenging schedule to start their 2015 campaign on Friday night. After facing top-ranked and two-time defending national champion Connecticut in their season-opener, the 'Cats were faced with the opportunity to go against another outstanding foe.

Neither team was able to get on the scoreboard throughout the majority of regulation. The two teams went into halftime scoreless though the Blue Devils held an 8-2 edge in shots over the opening 35 minutes of play. Two of Duke's shots were on goal and the Blue Devils had a 3-2 edge in penalty corners.

Northwestern came out the aggressors to open the second half. The Wildcats earned four corners over the first five-plus minutes of the period. Dominique Masters recorded two shots on goal while Isabel Flens added another, but Duke goalkeeper Lauren Blazing stopped all three shots to keep the game scoreless.

Duke had the advantage in shots the remainder of the half and its efforts finally paid off with just under five minutes remaining in regulation. Aileen Johnson an unassisted goal from just inside the circle to make it 1-0. Northwestern opted to pull Lindsay von der Luft from goal in favor of an extra attacker, but the Blue Devils managed to add an insurance goal at 67:40 when Robin Blazing scored off Ashley Kristen's assist.

The Wildcats got a goal back when Flens tallied her third goal of the season with 28 seconds remaining, but NU was unable to tally the equalizer.

Northwestern returns to action at 11 a.m. Central time Sunday when it takes on 13th-ranked Boston College, a 3-2 winner in overtime over Maryland in the first match of the evening Friday.
