EVANSTON, Ill. -- The 2015 Big Ten Championships have arrived, and for the first time since 2012 will be held at a new site: Victoria National Golf Club in Newburgh, Indiana. The 72-hole Championships takes place over three days from April 24-26, and the Wildcats come into the event with some momentum.
Northwestern has had an up-and-down season in 2014-15, shuttling three freshmen in and out of the lineup along with three senior members of the team. The Wildcats enter the Big Ten Championships on the upswing, however, after a third-place showing at Purdue's Boilermaker last weekend in which NU defeated four other B1G opponents for a season-best third-place result. In fact, over the last two tournaments at Ohio State's Kepler Intercollegiate and The Boilermaker, NU went 8-3 against conference competition with those eight wins coming against eight different schools.
Head coach David Inglis will put out a lineup featuring two seniors, one junior and two freshmen on the first tee Friday morning for 36 holes of play at the par-72, 7,239-yard Victoria National track. The third round will take place Saturday before Sunday's final round. Live results will be available courtesy of Golfstat.com.
Freshman Dylan Wu has been Northwestern's leader all season, claiming the individual championship against a very strong field at UCLA's Gifford Intercollegiate in the fall. Wu fired three rounds in the 60s and closed birdie-birdie for a final-round 4-under 67 and a one-stroke victory.
Junior Josh Jamieson has been a steady contributor all year long, racking up four top-20 and two top-10 performances while leading the Wildcats with 11 rounds at par or better. He has led the Northwestern lineup in four different events this year.
Senior Matthew Negri has been a big reason for NU's recent run of success entering the Big Ten Championships, earning his first top-20 of the season at The Kepler Intercollegiate before finishing a career-best ninth at last week's Boilermaker. After opening 70-68, Negri had two early birdies in the final round to get to 8-under par and in contention for the title before falling down a bit in the field, still ending up with a top-10.
Senior Bennett Lavin has been another strong middle of the lineup guy for NU this year, lowering his single-season stroke average in 2014-15 by nearly one full shot over his previous season best. Lavin has six rounds at par or better and matched his career-best finish with a 12th place result in the fall at the Erin Hills Intercollegiate.
Freshman Charles Wang will round out Northwestern's team lineup this weekend, and he represents a true wild card. A raw talent with the ability to go super low, Wang has six rounds at par or better including a trio of 3-under par efforts this year. He finished 3-0 at the Big Ten Match Play Championship to start the spring.
