`Cats Overwhelm Hawkeyes on Senior Day, 6-1

EVANSTON, Ill. -- In its last regular season home contest of the season, No. 26 Northwestern continued its dominating play with a 6-1 win over No. 72 Iowa. NU's sixth straight win moved them to 18-7 on the season and 7-2 in the Big Ten.

The victory was also a sweet gift to graduating seniors Alex Pasareanu and Alberto Zanotti, whom the `Cats honored before the match for Senior Day.

In doubles competition, the Hawkeyes opened with an 8-5 win at No. 3. However, Northwestern's ranked duos on the upper courts rallied for two victories to take the doubles point. No. 85 Fedor Baev and Strong Kirchheimer prevailed 8-5 at No. 2, and 44th-rankedSam Shropshire and Pasareanu wonby the same scoreat No. 1.

Baev/Kirchheimer have won five doubles contests in a row, and Shropshire/Pasareanu have now compiled four straight wins.

Freshman Logan Staggs extended the Wildcat lead with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Josh Silverstein on court 4. No. 57 Shropshire finished seconds later at No. 1, where he beat 112th-ranked Matt Hagan 6-3, 6-4. With the win, Shropshire pushed his unbeaten streak in singles to six.

Alp Horoz achieved the deciding fourth point at No. 6 by outlasting Jake Jacoby 6-2, 7-5. The sophomore too now boasts a six-match win streak in singles.

Play finished out on the remaining courts. Sophomore Konrad Zieba made the score 5-0 for NU at No. 3, besting Dominic Patrick 6-2, 6-3. Lefteris Theodorou then got the Hawkeyes' first point with a 6-4, 7-5 win over 116th-ranked Kirchheimer at No. 2.

Baev wrapped the afternoon on court 5. After dropping the first set, the junior surged back for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Stieg Martens. It is Baev's fifth consecutive singles win.

The `Cats close the regular season on the road next weekend. They meet Wisconsin at 6 p.m. on Friday, Apr. 17 and Minnesota at noon on Sunday, Apr. 19. The Big Ten Tournament, hosted by Illinois, will begin Thursday, Apr. 23.
