NU Defeats Indiana for First B1G Win, 4-3

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- In its first conference match in two weeks, No. 21 Northwestern found itself in a tight battle against No. 27 Indiana Friday afternoon. Though IU gained a quick 2-0 lead, the `Cats rallied back and emerged with a 4-3 victory.

NU improves to 9-5 on the season and 1-1 in Big Ten play.

The Hoosiers burst out of the gate in doubles, taking wins at No. 1 and 2 to go up 1-0. Indiana extended its lead at No. 4 in singles play, as Sven Lalic won 6-1, 6-2 over Kumar.

The `Cats then stemmed IU's momentum with three straight singles wins. No. 116 Strong Kirchheimer overcame Daniel Bednarczyk 6-4, 6-4 at the second spot, and No. 93 Sam Shropshire beat Sam Monette 6-4, 7-5 at the first. At No. 6, Alp Horoz defeated Stefan Lugonjic 7-5, 6-2.

The final two singles matches went to three sets. At No. 3, Logan Staggs came back with a second set win after dropping the first, but Raheel Manji ultimately won 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to knot the score at three a piece.

In the deciding contest at No. 5, Baev and opponent Matthew McCoy pushed to a third-set tiebreaker. With the match on the line, Baev came through with a 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) triumph to lock the Wildcat win.

Shropshire, Kirchheimer, and Baev all achieved their third straight singles wins in the match.

Northwestern is back in Evanston on Sunday for a home double-header. The Wildcats meet Big Ten foe Purdue at noon, and conclude the weekend with Western Illinois at 6:30 p.m.
