Northwestern Run-Rules Wisconsin Again, 14-6 (5)

3/28/2015 12:00:00 AM | Softball

EVANSTON, Ill. -- After scoring 19 runs -- its most in 32 years -- in the first game of a Big Ten doubleheader Saturday at Sharon J. Drysdale Field, Northwestern plated 14 more in the late contest to run-rule Wisconsin for a second time, 14-6 (5).

Northwestern (17-11, 5-0 B1G) and Wisconsin (13-18, 0-5 B1G) conclude their series at noon CT tomorrow, Sunday, March 29, at Sharon J. Drysdale Field.

Wisconsin got on the board in the top of the first of this game without the benefit of a base hit. The leadoff batter drew a walk against Northwestern starter Amy Letourneau (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic), stole second, moved to third on a groundout and then came home when a two-out third strike got to the backstop for a wild pitch.

Northwestern countered right away in the bottom half of the first when senior Andrea DiPrima (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) drove a soaring home run off the wall of McGaw Hall beyond left field, knotting the score 1-1. The shot was DiPrima's team-high seventh of the year and the 11th of her career. The homering was not done yet for the frame, either. Letourneau was hit by a pitch before senior Julia Kuhn (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South) continued the assault of McGaw Hall with a booming two-run shot, making it 3-1.

Kuhn's home run was her second of the day, her fourth of the season and the sixth of her career.

With one out in the bottom of the second, Northwestern mounted yet another rally. Caylor Arnold (Mt. Gilead, Ohio/Mt. Gilead) and Olivia Duehr (Antioch, Ill./Antioch) each drew walks before Sabrina Rabin (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) extended her current hitting streak to 11 games with a bases-loading infield single.

DiPrima added one to the #B1GCats total with a sacrifice fly to deep center that scored Arnold before Andrea Filler (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger) dropped a two-run double in between the center and right fielders to extend the NU cushion to five, 6-1, after two innings.

Wisconsin got its first hit of the game with two outs in the top of the third, but Letourneau shut down the frame with her sixth strikeout of the contest.

Northwestern continued its scoring in the third. Kuhn led off with a single before giving way to pinch runner Abbey Boyd (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier). One out later, Anna Edwards (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) drew a walk, then, with two outs in the inning, Duehr deposited a double off the fence in right-center field to push both Wildcats across the plate, making the score 8-1.

Wisconsin got back on the board in the top of the fourth with a barrage of singles, many of which stayed on the infield. Still, in contrast with Northwestern's homer heavy attack, the scoring was equally as effective in a five-run fourth that cut the Wildcats' lead all the way down to two runs, 8-6.

In need of a shutdown inning after the rally, Wisconsin's starter Taylor-Paige Stewart instead walked DiPrima, Filler and Letourneau to load the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fourth. Fran Strub (Coralville, Iowa/Clear Creek Amana) entered to run for DiPrima while Marissa Panko (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) ran for Letourneau. Kuhn decidedly did not walk, instead she lined a double over the head of the right fielder to plate a pair. Brianna LeBeau (Worth, Ill./H.L. Richards) then put a ball in play that the third baseman tried to bring home, but the throw was wide to allow Panko to score and make it an 11-6 game.

With runners at second and third and one out, Arnold hit a ball deep into the hole at short that the shortstop dove to glove. The shortstop's only chance for an out after the dive was at the plate, but the throw was not in time to get Kuhn. Later, with two outs, DiPrima put a ball in play that the first baseman mishandled, allowing LeBeau to scamper home and grow the lead to 13-6 before the inning ended.

Wisconsin threatened to score again in the top of the fifth on a two-out ball that got to the backstop, but Arnold retrieved it and fired in time to Letourneau to make the out at the plate.

Northwestern then was able to score in its ninth-consecutive inning Saturday to end the second game early as well. Letourneau and Kuhn drew back-to-back walks to start the bottom of the fifth before LeBeau ended the game with a double.

Kuhn had the big bat in game two, going 3-for-3 with a home run, a double and a single to drive in four runs while scoring twice. DiPrima, Filler and Duehr each drove in two.

Letourneau (9-8) got the win, going all 5.0 innings and allowing six runs on seven hits with six walks and 10 strikeouts.
