EVANSTON, Ill. -- Junior Jordan Wilimovsky begins his quest for a national title March 26-28 at the 2015 NCAA Championships in his third-straight appearance at the meet. He earned the first All-America award of his career with a fourth-place finish in the 1,650 freestyle one year ago. This season, he enters the NCAA Championships as the No. 1 overall seed in the 1,650 free and as the No. 11 seed in the 500 free.
Iowa and its Campus Recreation and Wellness Center (CWRC) play host to the 2015 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships. Wilimovsky is well acquainted with Championships swimming at the Hawkeyes' home after setting the pool record there in the 1,650 free last month while winning the Big Ten title in the event. He also netted a third-place finish in the 500 free. Both of those swims further lowered the school records Wilimovsky already held; in addition, his 1,000 free split time during the 1,650 free race chopped nine seconds off of the school mark at that distance.
One season after picking up the first All-America award in his career, junior Jordan Wilimovsky is hoping to add two more to his trophy case at the 2015 NCAA Championships. Wilimovsky will compete in the 500 free on Thursday, March 26, during the NCAA Championships' opening day. He then will take Friday off to focus on his mile swim Saturday, March 28. As the top seed in that event, he will race in the last timed final that is scheduled to kick off Saturday's evening session.
With the exception of one second-place finish against Minnesota and Purdue to end the dual-meet season, Wilimovsky was undefeated against collegiate competition at every distance over 500 yards, and even at that distance he racked up five victories, two runner-up performances and his third-place podium finish at the Big Ten Championships.
Wilimovsky hopes he can earn the first national title for Northwestern since NU Athletic Hall of Famers Matt Grevers and Mike Alexandrov graduated in 2007. For a three-season span from 2005-07, those two--along with fellow Hall of Famers Bruno Barbic and Kyle Bubolz in the 400 medley relay--racked up five individual event national championships. More on that modern "Golden Era" in Northwestern men's swimming and diving is chronicled on Page 3 of these notes.
Following the NCAA Championships meet, Wilimovsky will continue training as a member of the U.S. National Team. In his second season with the squad, Wilimovsky will compete for the U.S. this summer in the 1,500-meter freestyle and 10K open water races.
