Northwestern Sweeps Double-Dip Versus IUPUI, 5-3
3/14/2015 12:00:00 AM | Softball
NU's two wins in the double-dip give it an 11-10 record overall on the season while IUPUI drops to 14-6 this year with its losses. Northwestern next launches into Big Ten action with a series March 20-22 at Penn State.
Wildcats' starter Kristen Wood (Trevor, Wis./Wilmot Union) struck out the Jaguars' side in the top of the first, but also issued four walks to force in a run and give IUPUI the early lead for the second game in a row.
In the bottom of the first frame, senior Andrea DiPrima (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) smoked a one-out double to the fence in right-center for the 35th double of her career, tying her with the eminent Wildcat Carri Leto (2001-04) for sixth in NU history. She would make her way to third but remain standing there when the inning ended.
IUPUI led off the top of the second with a double to end Wood's consecutive hitless innings streak at nine dating to her no-hitter over Ball State Sunday. Another hit followed to give the Jaguars a 2-0 lead, but that is all the visitors would get thanks in part to Caylor Arnold (Mt. Gilead, Ohio/Mt. Gilead) throwing out a runner trying to steal. Arnold showed off her arm again in the top of the third when she picked off a runner at first base.
While the Jaguars scored most of their runs in game one Saturday off Wildcats' miscues, it was Northwestern turning errors into runs in the second contest. With one out in the bottom of the third, Sabrina Rabin (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) and Krista Williams (Pleasanton, Calif./Amador Valley) both singled. Then, with DiPrima at the plate, IUPUI dropped a foul ball to give the senior new life; she cashed in with an RBI single to right. Andrea Filler (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger) followed with a fly ball to left that was dropped to allow another run to come home and tie the game, 2-2.
Amy Letourneau (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) entered the circle in relief to begin the top of the fifth and fanned a pair during a scoreless inning. In the bottom of the frame, DiPrima roped her third hit of the contest before Letourneau notched a two-out hit of her own, but the Wildcats' runners were stranded at second and third when the inning ended with the score still tied.
IUPUI loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the sixth against Letourneau, who then got a foul-out before a pop up that appeared to be headed for the infield. Instead, the wind that had picked up to over 20 mph sustained blowing straight across the outfield pushed the ball in a hurry toward Fran Strub (Coralville, Iowa/Clear Creek Amana) in right. Strub made a wonderful play to stay with it and make the catch, but it allowed the runner at third to tag and give the Jaguars a 3-2 lead.
Northwestern put more pressure on the IUPUI defense in the sixth, and it cracked. Anna Edwards (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) led off with a pure hustle double to left field before giving way to pinch runner Marissa Panko (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy). Brianna LeBeau (Worth, Ill./H.L. Richards) and Williams both followed with balls in play that were thrown away for errors, allowing two runs to come home and put NU in the lead.
For good measure, with two outs, DiPrima rocketed her fourth hit of the game to the fence in center for another double and a 5-3 Wildcats' advantage. The double pushed her past Leto in the NU record book with 36 for her career.
IUPUI rallied in the top of the seventh, putting a pair of runners aboard with one out. Letourneau got out of it with two more strikeouts to reach four for the game and pick up the victory. She went 3.0 innings in relief, giving up a run on two hits and two walks.
Wood went 4.0 innings in the start, allowing two runs on three hits with six walks and eight strikeouts.
At the plate, DiPrima was a career-best 4-for-4 with two doubles, driving in two. Rabin had two hits and scored twice.
