EVANSTON, Ill. -- In its only match of the weekend, No. 20 Northwestern cruised past Middle Tennessee State 6-1 Friday afternoon. With the win, NU improves to 8-5 on the season and 5-1 at home.

The 'Cats got on the board early with two quick doubles wins. Alp Horoz and Mihir Kumar cruised to their seventh straight victory with an 8-1 win at No. 3. Seconds later, Alex Pasareanu and Sam Shropshire triumphed by the same margin at No. 2 to put NU up 1-0.

In singles, 93rd-ranked Shropshire won by retirement at No. 1 to extend the Northwestern lead to 2-0. The match halted with Shropshire up 5-3 in the first set over Ben Davis.

At No. 5, Fedor Baev captured Northwestern's third point with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Gian Issa. Logan Staggs then secured the Wildcat victory at No. 3, where he beat Victor Hoang 6-3, 6-1.

Play continued on the even-numbered courts. Kumar powered through a close tiebreaker and prevailed 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8) over Dima Zyhmantovich at No. 4. No. 116 Strong Kirchheimer finished soon after with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Ettore Zito at No. 2.

The match concluded at No. 6, where Horoz fell 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) to Robin Riethmueller.

The 'Cats return to Big Ten action next weekend, opening at Indiana with a 2 p.m. match on Friday, Mar. 6. NU then hosts a double-header on Sunday, beginning with Purdue at noon followed by Western Illinois at 6:30 p.m.
