ITHACA, N.Y. -- After starting Big Ten play on Friday at Illinois, No. 26 Northwestern returned to non-conference competition at No. 64 Cornell. The Big Red came in confident after an upset win over No. 27 Penn State the previous day, but the 'Cats dominated in singles to win 4-2.

To open the match, Mihir Kumar and Alp Horoz extended their doubles winning streak to six with a 6-4 triumph at No. 3. The duo is now 7-1 on the season.

However, the Cornell pair at No. 2 achieved a 6-2 victory over Alex Pasareanu and Sam Shropshire to even the score, and CU clinched the lead-off point with a 6-3 win over Fedor Baev and Strong Kirchheimer at No. 1.

The 'Cats quickly took over in singles play. No. 96 Shropshire cruised past Sam Fleck 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1, and Baev prevailed 6-3, 6-3 over Dylan Brown on the sixth court.

Bernardo Casares Rosa then bested Logan Staggs 7-5, 6-3 to tie it at two apiece. However, No. 64 Kirchheimer powered through a close second set to beat Stefan Vinti 6-4, 7-6 at No. 2, and Kumar sealed the Wildcat win with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 victory over Colin Sinclair at No. 4.

Horoz left his match unfinished at No. 5, where he was tied 6-1, 5-7, 5-5 with Chris Vrabel.

Northwestern improves to 7-5 on the season and returns home on Friday, Feb. 27 for a 2:30 p.m. match against Middle Tennessee State.
