Syracuse Stymies Seventh-Inning Northwestern Rally, 2-1

2/21/2015 12:00:00 AM | Softball

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. -- Syracuse scratched across a pair of early runs late Friday night at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, then held off a seventh-inning Northwestern rally to defeat the Wildcats 2-1 in a game that finished just shy of 1:30 a.m. CT.

Syracuse now is 6-6 on the year with its victory while Northwestern is 3-8 with its loss. The contest was slated for an 8:30 p.m. PT/10:30 p.m. CT start time but did not get underway until nearly 11:15 p.m. CT due to earlier delays on the field.

The Wildcats return to action at 7 p.m. CT/5 p.m. PT tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 21, against No. 14 LSU at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.

Syracuse opened the scoring in this game with a two-out, solo home run in the top of the second off of Northwestern starter Amy Letourneau (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic). The Wildcats attempted to battle back in the bottom of the third, beginning with a leadoff Anna Edwards (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) walk. Edwards was put out at second on a Caylor Arnold (Mt. Gilead, Ohio/Mt. Gilead) fielder's choice ball for the first out of the inning, then Arnold moved to second when freshman Sabrina Rabin (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) singled on the infield.

Both Arnold and Rabin moved up a bag on a passed ball before Andrea DiPrima (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Syracuse got two strikeouts, though, to put down the rally and keep its slim 1-0 edge.

The Orange added one more to their total in the fourth, though it could have been worse. With one out, Syracuse loaded the bases before Letourneau got a strikeout. The next batter walked to force home a run and double the score to 2-0 before another Letourneau K ended the frame.

After a scoreless bottom of the fourth for the Wildcats' offense, Kristen Wood (Trevor, Wis./Wilmot Union) took over in the circle for Northwestern to start the fifth. She fanned the Syracuse side in order in the fifth and the sixth, but still the Wildcats could not scratch across a run against Syracuse's Jocelyn Cater.

In the top of the seventh, Wood struck out two more Orange while issuing a one-out walk and getting a pop-up to the shortstop -- the only out she retired in 3.0 innings of relief that was not a K.

Northwestern's offense had one final rally in it in the seventh. With one out in the bottom of that inning, Arnold singled back through the middle for the Wildcats' second hit of the contest. Rabin followed with her second hit of the game to move pinch runner Fran Strub (Coralville, Iowa/Clear Creek Amana) to second. DiPrima then worked her second walk of the game to load the bases with one away, the exact same situation she set up in the third inning.

This time, Northwestern cashed in when Andrea Filler (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger) lifted a fly ball to right field deep enough to score Strub and make it a one-run game. Syracuse retired the next batter, however, to end the game.

Letourneau (1-6) took the loss, allowing two runs on two hits and four walks with five strikeouts in 4.0 innings during her start. Wood tossed 3.0 innings of scoreless, hitless relief with eight strikeouts and just a single walk.
