'Cats Close Exhibition Slate with 80-64 Win Over Quincy

EVANSTON, Ill. - Four Wildcats scored in double figures, Aaron Falzon recorded an efficient 15 points on six shots in his collegiate debut and Northwestern shot an even 50 percent in an 80-64 exhibition win over Quincy on Thursday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
In his first game as a Wildcat, center Joey van Zegeren grabbed six offensive rebounds – 10 total – and two blocks. As a team, Northwestern outrebounded the Hawks 48-33 and limited them to 30.8 percent shooting. Alex Olah scored 12 points and Tre Demps stuffed the stat sheet with 13 points, six assists and five rebounds.
"I really liked his decision-making," Northwestern head coach Chris Collins said of Demps. "That's been an evolution for him. He's always been a guy who can score the ball, but his ability now to see the floor better, and when he gets that attention, he's such a dynamic scorer."
Northwestern jumped out to a hot start, hitting its first three field goals while playing tough defense on the Hawks. After a steal by Olah kicked off a fast break for the 'Cats, Bryant McIntosh split a pair of Quincy defenders with a perfect bounce pass to find Demps for an uncontested layup.
Scottie Lindsey knocked down Northwestern's first 3-pointer of the season on the following possession, putting the 'Cats in front, 11-2. Van Zegeren kept the momentum going with a put-back dunk, his first career points as a Wildcat, and Demps poured in five-consecutive points to stretch Northwestern's lead to 23-11.
The Hawks clawed back to within eight, but van Zegeren snuffed out any hope of a comeback with a block on Quincy's Evan McGaughey. After that, Northwestern triggered a 14-2 run fueled by two three-pointers from Falzon.
"For the first time putting on a uniform, to come out and get 15 points in 13 minutes, that's pretty darn good," Collins said. "He can shoot the leather off the ball. It puts a lot of pressure on defenses when you have a guy like that."
The run gave Northwestern a 41-19 lead, and the 'Cats went into halftime with a 46-27 edge. Demps finished the first half nearly perfect from the field, hitting five of his six shots for 11 points to go along with three rebounds and four assists, and Olah added eight points on just four shots. Law and Falzon rounded out the well-balanced attack with eight and seven points, respectively, on just seven combined shots.
Coming out of the break, McIntosh got on the score sheet with five quick points, and van Zegeren added his second block when he came out of nowhere to swat away Quincy guard Thomas Jackson's layup attempt.
Falzon stayed hot with his third three-pointer of the game, then added a layup to put him at a then-game high 12 points. The 'Cats pushed their lead to 60-39.
Lindsey stayed perfect from long range off a nice pass from Nathan Taphorn, who joined the 3-point barrage himself minutes later with a long trey. Minutes later, van Zegeren slammed home his second dunk amidst a swarm of Hawk defenders, giving Northwestern a 74-49 lead.
"Just his size is a difference-maker for us…his activity around the basket, being able to alter shots, block some shots, finish at the rim," Collins said. "To be able to bring him off the bench for Alex, it's just a dimension we haven't had. I thought he played well, and he'll play a lot better the more he settles in."
Falzon's fourth 3-pointer capped off the scoring for Northwestern, and the 'Cats finished with an 80-64 win. They will open the season on Nov. 13 against UMass Lowell at 7 p.m. at Welsh-Ryan.
