EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern aims to continue it solid start to the 2015-16 season Tuesday when it travels to Blackburg, Virginia, to take on Virginia Tech as part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. Central time.
The Wildcats (5-1) shot a season-best 55.2 percent from the field in cruising to a 90-63 home win over New Orleans on Saturday. Scottie Lindsey came off the bench to score a career-best 26 points on 9-of-12 shooting, including 6-of-7 from 3-point range. The Wildcats surged out to a 48-25 halftime lead and never looked back. Tre Demps contributed 16 points, while Alex Olah matched a career high with 6 blocked shots.
Lindsey had the most productive game of his career. His 26 points topped his previous career best of 12 points that he posted on two occasions as a freshman. His 6-for-7 effort from 3-point range marked the fourth-best performance in school history (minimum 5 attempts). The six 3-pointers were the most by a Northwestern player in a game since Alex Marcotullio hit six triples vs. Penn State March 7, 2013.
It was the third-best scoring performance by an NU non-starter going back to the 1982-83 season trailing only a 32-point performance by Jeff Grose vs. Rutgers on Dec. 5, 1988 and a 29-point effort by Walker Lambiotte vs. UW-Green Bay on Nov. 28, 1989.
Lindsey became the fifth Wildcat this season to post at least 20 points in a game through only six contests. He joined Tre Demps, Aaron Falzon, Bryant McIntosh and Alex Olah in tallying at least 20 points. Jackson State is the only other school in the country with five different 20-point scorers this year.
Tuesday's game is a return to Blacksburg for Northwestern graduate student center Joey van Zegeren who spent the previous four years at Virginia Tech. He appeared in 79 career games for the Hokies, including making 31 starts.
The Wildcats picked up points for the first time this season in this week's Associated Press Top 25 poll. Northwestern earned two points this week, tying them with Iowa and LSU for the 40th most points in the Nov. 30 rankings.
Northwestern is 6-10 in its first 16 Big Ten/ACC Challenge matchups. The Wildcats won four consecutive contests in the event from 2008-11. NU is 2-6 in road games in the Challenge. Tuesday's matchup will be the first all-time meeting between Northwestern and Virginia Tech.
Scouting Virginia Tech
The Hokies (4-2) split a pair of games at the Emerald Coast Classic in Destin, Florida, last weekend, falling 99-77 to No. 4 Iowa State on Friday before defeating UAB 82-77 in overtime on Saturday. Seth Allen led Virginia Tech with 23 points in Saturday's victory. Zach LeDay, a transfer from South Florida, is averaging a double-double to lead the Hokies, posting 19.0 points and 10.7 rebounds per contest. The Hokies boast a +11.3 rebounding margin. Buzz Williams is in his second season as head coach after previously serving as the head coach at Marquette.
