BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Bryant McIntosh scored 19 points and hit a game-winning layup in overtime and four Wildcats contributed double-digit points as Northwestern came away with a hard-fought 81-79 victory at Virginia Tech on Tuesday night in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

Tre Demps added 17 points while Sanjay Lumpkin and Nathan Taphorn contributed a season-highs of 12 and 11 points, respectively. The Wildcats improved to 6-1 on the season with the victory.

Northwestern held Virginia Tech without a basket for nearly three minutes to open the game, forcing the Hokies to miss their first four shots. Demps, who came into the game 11th in the Big Ten in scoring, was responsible for Northwestern's first nine points, giving the 'Cats a four-point lead at the under-16 timeout.

The 'Cats dominated inside in the first half, outscoring Virginia Tech 18-6 in the paint. Their 3-point success opened up scoring opportunities inside, as Demps and McIntosh connected on floaters in the paint time and time again off shot fakes from midrange and beyond the arc. The duo combined for 19 points on 15 shots in the first 20 minutes.

With just under 12 minutes remaining in the half, the 'Cats held an 18-9 lead. Taphorn hit two corner threes in quick succession just after the 10-minute mark, but Virginia Tech guard Seth Allen kept the game close, hitting his first four shots for 13 of his team's first 29 points. The Hokies came within four points multiple times, but Northwestern never relinquished its lead in the first half.

The 'Cats played strong defense, holding Virginia Tech to 36 percent shooting and forcing six turnovers in the period, but the Hokies' offensive rebounding success kept the score close until the 'Cats began to break away near the end of the half.

Northwestern led 33-26 as Virginia Tech called a timeout with 5:50 left in the period. Minutes later, Aaron Falzon was fouled on a 3-point attempt, and he hit all of his free throws to stretch Northwestern's lead back to nine. As time expired on the first half, Olah banked in a 3-pointer from the top of the arc, sending the 'Cats into halftime with a 45-36 lead.

Coming out of the break, Northwestern stayed scoreless for a little more than three minutes. But Lumpkin converted on a tough and-one layup then hit the free throw, putting the 'Cats up 48-41.

Virginia Tech went on a five-point run to pull within two, but McIntosh stanched the bleeding with a layup off a nice pass from Gavin Skelly. The sophomore forward drove in for a layup of his own after losing his defender at the top of the key on a pump fake, and McIntosh brought Northwestern's lead back to six points with a driving layup on the next possession, putting him at 10 points for the game.

The Hokies tied the score at 58 with 8:45 left on a tip-in by forward Satchel Pierce, but Taphorn immediately responded with his third 3-pointer to put Northwestern back on top. A few possessions later, Demps found Joey van Zegeren, who played at Virginia Tech as an undergraduate student, alone under the basket for a dunk, giving the 'Cats a four-point lead.

Following a layup by Demps, McIntosh drew a double team and lobbed to van Zegeren, again unguarded in the paint, for an alley-oop to give Northwestern a 69-63 lead. McIntosh, wide open at the top of the arc, followed with his first three of the game. But Virginia Tech forced overtime with two late free throws to tie the game at 73.

The Hokies opened overtime with a four-point run, but Lumpkin and McIntosh hit 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions to regain the lead. Then, with the score tied at 79, McIntosh drove in finished a contested layup with 24.7 seconds remaining, which proved to be the game-winner.
