PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Northwestern fencing went 3-2 at the Elite Cup Duals in Philadelphia, including a 14-13 victory over the reigning national champions, Columbia. The Wildcats also posted victories over Ohio State and Johns Hopkins, with the latter a 25-2 thrashing.
The weekend's results move Northwestern to 17-4 on the year.
Senior Courtney Dumas had three of those victories against Columbia, leading the Epee squad to a 6-3 victory. With the score at 13-11 heading into the final set of Saber matchups, the sabre lineup of freshman Maddy Curzon and juniors Cindy Oh and Julia Abelsky swept their bouts to upset Columbia.
The Wildcats went a remarkable 30-15 on the day in Epee bouts, including 6-3 and 7-2 results in victories over Ohio State and Johns Hopkins respectively. Northwestern fell behind early in the foil segment against the Buckeyes, but the strong epee performance was followed by a 7-2 saber result, including junior Alisha Gomez-Shah defeating OSU's Alexa Antipas, 5-2. Antipas finished sixth in the NCAA tournament last year and Gomez-Shah's win gave the 'Cats a 14-13 victory.
While epee performances led the way overall, against Johns Hopkins they were outshone by the foil and saber teams. The two sets were undefeated, with the foil only conceding nine points, and the saber allowing just 15.
After defeating Columbia, the Wildcats almost slayed two more giants in Notre Dame and Princeton, who finished third and fourth respectively in last year's NCAA Tournament. Against Princeton, the epee and saber went 9-9, keeping Northwestern in contention before the Tigers pulled away to a 17-10 victory.
Epee snagged 6 wins against Notre Dame to tie the score at nine apiece heading into the saber. The 'Cats were still tied heading into the final set of three bouts, and at 13-13 it came down to the final point between Oh and Notre Dame's Tara Hasset to decide the winner. Hasset managed to come out with the touch, giving the Fighting Irish the narrowest of victories.
Northwestern now has a lengthy winter break before it resumes competition on Jan. 8 at the next NAC in St. Louis, Mo.
