EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern wrapped up the fall portion of the 2015-16 season with the conclusion of the ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Sunday.
The fall season was highlighted by junior Konrad Zieba's participation in the National Indoors. Zieba won his first round match over No. 107 Max Hinnisdaels of Auburn, one of his five wins over ranked opponents in nine matches. He went 7-2 over the course of the fall.
"Konrad was a great representative of our team at National Indoors," head coach Arvid Swan said. "He beat a quality opponent in the first round before losing a close match to one of the best players in the nation. Konrad has established himself as one of the very best players in college tennis over the course of the fall."
Strong Kirchheimer also had a strong fall, going 6-2 and advancing all the way to the semifinals of the ITA Midwest Regionals. Sam Shropshire, the highest nationally ranked Wildcat at No. 34, posted a 4-1 record against nationally ranked opponents and made it all the way to the finals of the back draw at the ITA All-American Championships.
Freshman Ben Vandixhorn was also impressive in his first collegiate action, going 5-2 in the fall and advancing to the semifinals of the Big Ten indoor championships.
"The team had a productive fall," Swan said. "We had a number of solid results, and the focus now is getting ready for our dual match season."
The 2016 season begins on Jan. 17 with a match at Louisville.
