
No. 26 Wildcats Sweep Opening Weekend Competition

EVANSTON, Ill. – The 26th-ranked Northwestern men's tennis team opened the 2016 season with a pair of sweeps on Sunday as part of an unusual away-home doubleheader.
The Wildcats traveled to Louisville, Ky. for a 9:30 a.m. match with the 36th-ranked Cardinals and left with a 4-0 sweep. Chicago's Big Ten Team then returned home to the Combe Tennis Center and won by the same margin over crosstown foe Chicago State.
Northwestern won a hard fought doubles point at Louisville. The Wildcats got on the board first with a 6-3 decision at No. 1 by the 52nd-nationally ranked tandem of Fedor Baev and Strong Kirchheimer. After a Cardinals' win at No. 3, Sam Shropshire and Konrad Zieba partnered for a close 7-6 (3) win at No. 2 to finish off the point. Shropshire then took care of business at No. 2 singles and was followed by Kirchheimer and true freshman Ben Vandixhorn, all of whom won in straight sets.
Zieba, the nation's 16th ranked player, had a commanding lead against No. 108 Alex Gornet and his match went unfinished just one point shy of a win. Baev and Alp Horoz both held leads went there matches went unfinished as well.
Chicago's Big Ten Team changed up the lineup a little bit against Chicago State, using all three freshmen. In doubles, Mihir Kumar and freshman Jason Seidman received a win by forfeit, and the Wildcats clinched the point with a 6-2 win at No. 1 by Baev and Kirchheimer.
Singles play went smoothly with Kumar receiving a forfeit at No. 6 to put Northwestern up 2-0. Vandixhorn won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 4, and Baev ended the day with a win by the same score at No. 3.
Northwestern is back in action Friday, Jan. 22 at the annual ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The Wildcats travel downstate to Champaign, Ill. and take on Tulsa in the first round. Notre Dame and host Illinois will also be in the competition. The winner of the four-team tournament earns an invite to National Indoors in Charlottesville, Va. in February.
