Barham shaved five seconds off of her performance at last year's Big Ten Championships, finishing Saturday's 6K course in 21:17.2 to lead Northwestern. She was also the top finisher for the Wildcats at last weekend's Illini Open and the Louisville Pre-Nationals Invitational on Oct. 17. Pigneri and Coffey made their Championships debuts, and crossed the finish line separated by just more than a second, with the former finishing in 22:19.3 and the latter one spot behind at 22:20.4.
Freshman Mary Orders was next for Northwestern in 22:46.1, with senior Allison Jacobsen (22:53.3) rounding out the scoring for the Wildcats ahead of sophomore Elena Miller (23:02.0) and freshman Hannah Anderson (23:18.6).
Senior Camille Blackman was forced to withdraw from the race at the 2K mark due to injury. Classmate Rachel Weathered was the top Wildcat on the leaderboard after one 2K lap, and was second to Barham after the second loop, but was nearly felled before battling relentlessly to cross the finish line in the final Big Ten Championships appearance of her career.
Michigan junior Erin Finn won the Big Ten women's title in 19:44.9, leading wire-to-wire and besting the second-place finisher by five seconds, and third-place by nearly 14 seconds. Finn captured the Conference championship as a freshman in 2013, and returned this season after not competing in last year's event. Her time is the third-fastest championship result on a 6K course in Big Ten history.
No. 15 Penn State earned the team championship with 53 points, five ahead of No. 2 Michigan. The Nittany Lions placed three runers in the Top-9 (4-6-9) and six in the Top-25 (12-22-25) en route to victory.
