Wildcats will honor 11 seniors in pregame ceremonies
EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 16 Northwestern winds its 2015 regular season to a close at 3 p.m. Friday when it faces Penn State on Senior Day at Lakeside Field. The Wildcats will honor 11 individuals in pregame ceremonies prior to their final home game.
Northwestern's decorated senior class has posted an impressive 59-22 record to date. The Wildcats earned a share of the Big Ten regular-season title in 2013 and won the program's first conference tournament title a year ago. NU has earned top-10 national rankings each year that the senior class has been on campus.
Northwestern (12-6 overall) enters the final date of the Big Ten season tied for third place in the league standings with Indiana and Ohio State at 4-3. The 2015 Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament gets underway next Thursday in Bloomington, Indiana.
The Wildcats have won their last three matches, including a pair in the state of Ohio last weekend. Northwestern out-shot Ohio State 29-2 in earning a 2-0 victory in Columbus last Friday. Isabel Flens and Pascale Massey accounted for NU's goals in the contest as the team earned it second straight shutout and Big Ten-leading fifth of the season overall. The 'Cats started slowly in Sunday's contest at Ohio as they fell behind 2-0 before Dominique Masters helped lead Northwestern back as she scored a hat trick in Northwestern's eventual 4-2 victory. It marked Masters' second three-goal game of the season.
Flens ranks second in the Big Ten with her 15 goals this season, a mark that also ranks tied for fifth nationally. Masters has chipped in with 13 goals and a conference-leading 102 shots which is 20 more than Iowa's Stephanie Norlander. Caroline Troncelliti and Eva van Agt join Flens and Masters in recording double-digit goals this season as they have 10 apiece. Northwestern ranks a narrow second to Maryland in the Big Ten with an average of 3.39 goals scored per game.
In goal, Lindsay von der Luft owns a conference-leading five shutouts to go along with a 1.47 goals-against average.
Scouting Penn State
The Nittany Lions (7-9, 3-4 B1G) are coming off a 3-2 home win over Iowa last Friday. Freshman Aurelia Meijer's goal with no time remaining capped her hat trick and gave Penn State the victory. Meijer's six goals on the season are tied for the team lead with Brooke Birosik and Stephanie Hussey. Goalkeeper Jenny Rizzo sports a 1.63 goals-against average with a .710 save percentage. In last year's meeting in University Park, Penn State denied Northwestern a share of the Big Ten regular-season title when the fifth-ranked Nittany Lions defeated the eighth-ranked Wildcats, 2-1.
