Masters tallies two goals for Northwestern
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Dominique Masters scored a pair of goals, but No. 16 Northwestern played from behind the entire match and couldn't catch Penn State as the Wildcats dropped their regular-season finale 3-2 on Friday afternoon at Lakeside Field.
The loss drops NU to 12-7 overall and 4-4 in Big Ten play. The Wildcats await the completion of Saturday's match between Michigan and Ohio State to determine their quarterfinal round opponent on Thursday at the Big Ten tournament in Bloomington, Indiana.
In the meantime, Friday's defeat was another tough one to swallow for NU. The 'Cats out-shot 22-11 in the contest, including 14-1 in the second half.
Penn State tallied the first goal of the game at the 6:38 mark of the first half when Brooke Birosik put home a rebound to give the visitors the early advantage. The Nittany Lions' lead would grow to 2-0 at 17:28 when Aurelia Meijer entered the circle from the right side and found Birosik who poked home her second goal of the day.
Northwestern got back in the game with just over six minutes remaining in the opening half when Masters gathered a loose ball inside the circle and fired a blast past Jenny Rizzo to make it a one-goal game. Penn State eventually would carry the same advantage into halftime.
Out of the intermission, the Wildcats came out firing as they went in search of the tying goal. However, Rizzo made a pair of saves before the Nittany Lions converted on their lone chance of the second half. Birosik got end line and somehow managed to sneak the ball into the cage for her third goal of the match and ninth of the season to make it 3-1 at 45:35.
Northwestern had numerous opportunities to close back to within one, but was unable to captialize on its opportunities. It appeared Masters would cut the deficit in half with eight minutes left, but the shot banged off the right post. NU had another outstanding chance with 6:18 left when it was awarded a penalty stroke, but Rizzo lunged to her right to make the save.
The Wildcats managed one final goal with time expired when Masters scored on a penalty corner off assists from Lisa McCarthy and Charlotte Martin, but it wasn't enough as Northwestern wrapped up its regular season on a down note.
Rizzo was outstanding in goal for Penn State, recording 15 saves while Linsday von der Luft made five for the 'Cats.
