'Cats Come Back to Defeat #13 Maryland in Overtime, 2-1

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Northwestern (4-4-1, 2-2-0 Big Ten) stunned No. 13 Maryland (4-3-3, 1-1-2 Big Ten) in an upset on Friday afternoon, winning in overtime by a score of 2-1.
The game-winner came off of a wide-open goal in the 99th minute by junior Getenet Tuji, who recorded his first career goal in dramatic fashion. Teammate Joey Calistri took the ball nearly to the endline, drew the Terrapins goalkeeper out of the net, and sent it to Tuji.
"Sometimes it is all about surviving," head coach Tim Lenahan said. "Maryland was on us all game and we never panicked even after we gave up a goal. When you get to OT it is about making a play and Joey Calistri and Getenet Tuji connected for a huge goal. Our back line did a great job of blocking shots and laying out for balls. As well as Maryland played they probably deserved better but we are excited about a tough road Big Ten win against a very good team."
All the scoring was concentrated in the latter part of the second half and overtime. At 78:48, Maryland freshman Jorge Calix picked up a rebound off Wildcat goalkeeper Zak Allen and notched his first career goal, making the score 1-0.
After lying dormant through most of the match, Northwestern did not take long to respond to the Maryland aggression. In the 83rd minute, freshman Camden Buescher received a perfect pass from Sam Forsgren right after a free kick and sent it to the back of the net. Buescher's first career goal evened the score at one.
The defense were the heroes of the game for the Wildcats. Maryland outshot Northwestern 24-4, but the NU backline staved off almost all of the Terrapin chances. An example of that was in the 65th minute, as the Terrapin attackers launched a barrage of shots at Allen and he denied all of their chances.
With the victory, the Wildcats evened up their Big Ten record at 2-2-0. Northwestern handed Maryland their first loss to a Big Ten team this season.
The Wildcats now return to Illinois but will play their next game on their road at DePaul on Wednesday, October 7 at 12 p.m. After that match, the 'Cats will play four straight games at home — one at UIC Flames Field and three at Toyota Park.
