Wildcats Win Again in Dramatic Fashion at DePaul, 2-1

10/7/2015 2:20:00 PM | Men's Soccer

CHICAGO — The Northwestern men's soccer program is making a habit of winning games in dramatic fashion.

Just five days after defeating No. 13 Maryland in overtime, 2-1, the Wildcats (5-4-1) defeated DePaul at Cacciatore Stadium on an own goal by the Blue Demons in the 86th minute Wednesday, 2-1.

Chicago's Big Ten Team had plenty of opportunities in the second half, but was finally able to score the game winner on a throw in from junior Jeffrey Hopson that was flicked into the back of the net by a DePaul defender.

The Wildcats took the lead in the first half on senior Joey Calistri's third goal of the season and 30th of his illustrious career. After a great run by senior Cole Missimo, sophomore Sam Forsgren had a look and took a shot from the right wing only for the ball to just miss off the post. Freshman Jake Roberge was there for a the rebound and calmly found Calistri in front of the net where he buried it from six yards. Forsgren and Roberge were credited with assists on the play.

The second half got off to a slow start, but the Blue Demons were able to even the game in the 58th minute on Jalen Harvey's first goal of the season. With the ball played in front on a free kick, senior goalkeeper Zak Allen was unable to corral it and DePaul's Hans Wustling found Harvey for the equalizer.

Roberge had a pair of opportunities in a stretch of six minutes midway through the second half, but his header off a free kick in the 61st minute was saved and his heel flick off a corner kick in the 67th minute went just wide of the net.

The Blue Demons nearly took the lead in the 80th minute when Simon Megally was able to get behind the defense on a long pass from the midfield, but Allen came up with a diving save on the 1-on-1 opportunity by to keep the score even. The 'Cats had yet another close call just two minutes later on a free kick from 30 yards by freshman Camden Buescher only for senior Nathan Dearth's header to just go over the cross bar.

The Wildcats are back in action this Saturday when they host SIU-Edwardsville in a rematch of last season's NCAA Tournament at UIC's Flames Field. Opening kick is scheduled for 6 p.m.
