Three `Cats To Compete in Qualifying Draw of ITA Championships

TULSA, Okla. -- Strong Kirchheimer and Logan Staggs both won two matches on Sunday to advance into the qualifying draw of the ITA Championships. They join sophomore preseason No. 78 Sam Shropshire in the first round of qualifying on Monday. Shropshire received an automatic bid into the draw.

To secure their spots in the qualifying bracket, Kirchheimer defeated Iowa's Matt Hagan 6-3, 7-6 (4), and Staggs outlasted Justin Carter of UMBC 7-6, 7-5.

Sophomore Konrad Zieba bowed out of the tournament in falling to Rishab Agarwal of Mississippi State 6-4, 6-4.

Tomorrow, Kirchheimer will take on Gordon Watson of the University of Florida, and Staggs will face Emmett Egger from the University of Washington. Shropshire's challenger will be Texas's Nick Naumann.

In the consolation draw on Sunday, Alp Horoz beat Constantin Schmitz of Tulane 7-5, 3-6, 7-5, and Fedor Baev bested Joel Rubio of Texas-San Antonio 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (3). Mihir Kumar fell to South Florida's Vadym Kalyuzhnyy 6-2, 6-4.
