NC State Steals Wildcats' Season Opener, 4-3

Raleigh, N.C. -- The `Cats went toe-to-toe with the Wolfpack on Friday night, but No. 28 North Carolina State ultimately claimed a narrow 4-3 victory over No. 34 Northwestern in both teams' spring season debuts.

NC State got on the board early with back-to-back doubles wins. The 19th-ranked duo of Ian Dempster and Robbie Mudge beat Alex Pasareanu and Mihir Kumar 6-3 at No. 1. Austen Powell and Simon Norenius then defeated Sam Shropshire and Logan Staggs 6-2 at No. 2 to clinch the point.

No. 51 Powell added another point for the Wolfpack with a quick 6-1, 6-2 win over Staggs at No. 2. Undaunted, however, the `Cats rallied to put themselves back into the match.

Kumar put NU within one by beating Dempster 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4. Shropshire then tied it up at No. 1, where he prevailed 7-6 (9-7), 6-3 over 123rd-ranked Mudge.

With the score knotted at two a piece, No. 108 Strong Kirchheimer then put the Wildcats ahead with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over No. 39 Nick Horton at No. 3.

At No. 5, Fedor Baev weathered a rough first set against Norenius but came back strong in the second. However, Norenius was able to even the score again with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) triumph. Thomas Weigel then captured the final point in besting Pasareanu 6-4, 6-0 at No. 6.

Northwestern next travels to No. 19 Vanderbilt, where it will play a noon match on Sunday.
