Medina Goal Earns Road Draw With Reigning B1G Champs
9/28/2014 11:32:00 AM | Men's Soccer
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Brandon Medina headed in the equalizing goal with just over a minute to go in regulation, leading Northwestern to a thrilling 1-1 draw on the road against the No. 17 Indiana Hoosiers.
It was Medina's first goal of the year and the fourth of his career. The sophomore was a unanimous selection to the 2013 Big Ten All-Freshman Team despite appearing in just 11 games in an injury-shortened season.
The two teams were scoreless into the game's 72nd minute. There, a penalty on Wildcats senior Grant Wilson gave the home side a penalty kick that Indiana's Tanner Thompson converted from the spot, ending goalkeeper Tyler Miller's scoreless streak at 380 minutes, and giving the Hoosiers a 1-0 lead.
Down a goal Northwestern pressed forward offensively and, as the two teams neared the end of regulation, head coach Tim Lenahan's squad was pouring on the pressure. With eight or nine Wildcats in the box, defender Nathan Dearth hit a shot that ricocheted off the crossbar and Medina out-jumped his defender to head in the game-tying goal, his first of the season.
In overtime, both teams had several chances to score the game-winner, including a fast break by Joey Calistri that was ultimately stopped by an Indiana defender's slide tackle. Miller, the reining Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, was tested several times throughout the game, finishing with eight saves in the 110-minute contest.
Northwestern and Indiana have now gone to overtime in four of their last five meetings, going back to 2011.
Now 4-1-4 overall and 0-1-2 in conference play, the 'Cats will be back at it next Sunday when they welcome the Maryland Terrapins, national semifinalists in each of the last two seasons, to Lakeside Field in a Big Ten clash. Game time is set for 12 p.m., tickets can be purchased at the gate or by calling 888-GO-PURPLE.
