Wildcats Prevail Over Perennially Powerful Terps, 3-2, in OT
10/5/2014 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's first Big Ten Conference win of 2014 came in dramatic fashion Sunday, with the 'Cats netting a game-winning goal just 66 seconds into overtime to top league newcomer and perennial national power Maryland, 3-2, at Lakeside Field.
Junior Cole Missimo had the honors of slamming home NU's "golden goal" to put the finishing touches on a one-goal, two-assist afternoon for the Dallas native. Joey Calistri, who had already tallied a goal for the 'Cats in regulation, set up Missimo's winner with a brilliant hustle play, keeping the ball in bounds on the end line to the left of the goal mouth and feeding it back across to a wide-open Missimo for the one-timer.
"Me and Joe [Calistri], we do it together," Missimo said. "It's a team effort. There's no way I'm getting anywhere close to those goals if it's not for the team. We're working together."
The strong finish to the game was as emphatic as the way Northwestern opened the action on Sunday; NU seized a 2-0 lead within the first 12 minutes, with Henry Herrillstriking his first goal of the season with less than three minutes gone by in the game. Herrill's tally was set up when a service from the left flank by Brandon Medina found the foot of Missimo, who directed the ball across the box to Harrill for the exclamation point.
Less than 10 minutes later, the Wildcats orchestrated a similar build-up on the left side of the field as Medina played a perfectly weighted through-ball to Missimo. The junior calmly picked out Calistri for the finish, giving Calistri four goals on the season and providing the Wildcats a promising 2-0 lead.
The Terrapins -- who have appeared in each of the last two NCAA College Cups -- increased their pressure in the attacking third as they looked to cut into their deficit, and were able to do so when an NU defender was whistled for a handball in the penalty area. UMD's Mael Corboz blasted his 26th-minute penalty kick past Northwestern goalkeeperTyler Miller to narrow the Wildcats' lead to one.
Northwestern's defense then withstood the siege of the Terrapin pressure for the next 60 minutes of game action before Maryland found the late equalizer on a goal by Jeroen Meefout. The score marked the first goal from the run of play allowed by Miller in a span of 521 minutes.
"Once you score and you're playing a team like this, it's full of future professional players, they're going to have ball a lot, they're going to be on you a lot," head coach Tim Lenahansaid. "It's more nerve-wracking having a lead than it is to just be in the run of play."
But Northwestern came out as the aggressors to start the 10-minute overtime period, racing down the left of the pitch and surprising the Terrapins back line when Calistri managed to keep the ball in play and serve up Missimo's game-winner on a platter.
Maryland outshot the host Wildcats by a margin of 15-7, but Miller made five saves in the game while UMD goalkeeper Zack Steffen tallied one.
The Wildcats now have a fond memory from Lakeside Field to carry with them on their upcoming five-game road trip, which begins Wednesday night with a visit to Northern Illinois. The 'Cats will not play again in Evanston until a Nov. 2 date with Penn State.
