SKOKIE, Ill. -- On a beautiful day for scoring that saw several records tied or broken, Northwestern surged five spots in the team standings Monday during the final round of the Wildcats' own 18th Windon Memorial Classic at Evanston Golf Club.
Sitting 13th and 14th, respectively, after 36 holes of play, both Northwestern and Tulsa both rose like runaway hot air balloons up the standings, each finishing the tournament tied for eighth position at 22-over 862. The Wildcats tied for the fourth-best team score of the final round with a 2-over 282 to earn their finish after shooting 293-287 on Sunday.
The team race atop the leaderboard began the day with three schools -- California, Ohio State and Michigan -- within a stoke of each other before former NU associate head coach Steve Bailey's Marquette squad roared up the standings to force a four-way tie early in the round. Eventually, overnight leader California separated itself from the pack to earn the team title at 6-under 834 following a sizzling 10-under 270 in the final round; both of those scores represented Windon Memorial Classic records for 18- and 54-hole totals.
Ohio State finished second at 7-over 847 followed by Michigan and Iowa tied for third at 9-over 849.
Individually, Tulsa's Colton Staggs earned medalist honors after an impeccable bogey-free final round that saw him tie Luke Donald's 2007 course record of 7-under 63. That total also tied Jorge Campillo's Windon Memorial Classic single-round record of 63 fired in 2008 at North Shore Country Club. Staggs' score, and a late hole-out from the fairway on the par-4 eighth hole by Matt Mabrey, helped Tulsa make the biggest move up the team leaderboard on Sunday.
For Northwestern, freshman Dylan Wu (Medford, Ore./St. Mary's School) led the Northwestern Monday charge with a 1-under 69, a six-shot improvement over his opening score in the tournament Sunday. Of his four birdies, he immediately follow three with bogeys before closing par-birdie-par over his last three holes to post a red number.
Wu climbed 19 places in the individual standings to finish 29th at 6-over 216 (75-72-69).
Senior Matthew Negri (El Cajon, Calif./Grossmont) fired his best round of the tournament by far on Monday, but it was looking grim at 3-over par through 11 holes. From that point, Negri made three birdies coming home to get back to even-par 70 for the day.
The effort shot Negri 16 spots up in the standings to 54th place at 11-over 221 (77-74-70) for the Windon.
Junior Josh Jamieson (St. Andrews, Scotland/High School of Dundee) continued his steady scoring, making three birdies and two bogeys for a 1-over 71. He led the Wildcats in the individual standings at 4-over 214 (72-71-71), placing 23rd in the field.
"I played badly today, but I was able to recover and save a lot of strokes," Jamieson said "I'm happy that my bad rounds are 72s and 71s rather than 77s or 78s. I wasn't really scaring the hole today, and I had a lot of 40-foot birdie putts."
Senior Bennett Lavin (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) had three bogeys on his Monday opening nine and turned in 2-over 37. He suffered another bogey early in his second nine before bouncing back with a birdie on his penultimate hole to card a 2-over 72. Lavin placed 36th in the field at 8-over 218 (75-71-72).
Senior Scott Smith (Pepper Pike, Ohio/University School), who led Northwestern in the opening round with a 71, struggled to a 10-over 80 on Monday. He ended up in 67th place at 14-over 224 (71-73-80).
Competing as an individual, freshman Sam Triplett (Scottsdale, Ariz./Brophy Prep) moved up 12 spots in the standings with a final round 1-over 71. Five birdies on the day had the young Wildcat under par before late bogeys on Nos. 7 and 8. His first college tournament saw him finish 36th at 8-over 218 (74-73-71).
Also playing as an individual for NU was freshman Charles Wang (Beijing, China/Sarasota Christian School), who on Sunday had diametrically opposed rounds of 78 and 67. He fit all of that into one round Monday, ballooning to 5-over par through 12 holes before making three birdies in his final six to charge back to 2-over 72. Wang placed 32nd overall at 7-over 217 (78-67-72).
Northwestern returns to action Oct. 5-7 at Marquette's Erin Hills Intercollegiate in Erin Hills, Wis.
