Masters Notches Hat Trick as Wildcats Rip RedHawks, 5-1

9/2/2014 12:00:00β€―AM | Field Hockey

Sept. 2, 2014

OXFORD, Ohio -- Dominique Masters recorded her second career hat trick as No. 14 Northwestern closed out its season-opening road trip Tuesday with a 5-1 victory at Miami (Ohio).

Masters previously recorded three goals in a 4-3 overtime win over Iowa Sept. 27, 2013.

"We're happy to get a road win today after a long weekend," Northwestern head coach Tracey Fuchs said. "We were sharp on corners today and our defense had another solid game. We're excited to head back to Evanston to open our home season later this week."

The Wildcats got on the board at 4:45 of the opening half as Caroline Troncelliti's initial shot was saved by Alysa Xavier but Isabel Flens was there to put home the rebound and give NU the early 1-0 advantage. It was the second consecutive match that Flens scored the first goal of the match as she also tallied first at No. 3 Connecticut on Sunday.

The visitors kept the pressure on and the lead eventually grew to two in the 17th minute. Northwestern earned a penalty corner and Masters' shot was saved, but the 'Cats were awarded a penalty stroke. Lisa McCarthy stepped up and found the back of the cage, beating Xavier for her first goal of the season.

Just over two minutes later, NU increased its advantage to 3-0 when freshman Sophia Miller found Masters in front for the score.

The RedHawks took advantage of a penalty corner to trim into their deficit at 21:21 as Ali Froede scored off assists from Shannon Regan and Bea Dechant.

Northwestern carried its 3-1 lead into the intermission as it held a 9-4 edge in shots over the opening 35 minutes of play.

The Wildcats were able to push their advantage back up to four just under five minutes into the second half thanks to penalty corner execution. Again it was Masters who was able to notch the goal, scoring her second of the day with Charlotte Martin and Pascale Massey picking up assists.

NU took the foot off the gas offensively the rest of the way but still managed one more goal with 62:25 as Masters completed the hat trick. A penalty corner for Northwestern led to a goal for the third time in the match as Martin found Masters for her team-leading fourth score of the season.

The matchup was special for Masters not just because she tallied three goals, but because she also had the chance to play against her sister, Genevieve, a Miami freshman. It was the second time in three days that a matchup between the Wildcats and the RedHawks included sisters going head to head. On Sunday, senior KK Barr of the Northwestern women's soccer team battled against her sister Jenny, a freshman at Miami.

The 'Cats finished the contest with a 14-7 edge in shots and a 7-4 advantage in penalty corners. Maddy Carpenter made three saves to earn the victory in goal for NU.

Northwestern (2-1) opens up its 2014 home season at noon Friday as it hosts Dartmouth at Lakeside Field. The Wildcats enter the contest with 15 consecutive home victories, one shy of the school record.
