Wildcats Trounce Big Green in Home-Opener, 9-3
9/5/2014 12:00:00 AM | Field Hockey
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Isabel Flens and Caroline Troncelliti both notched hat tricks and No. 14 Northwestern scored seven times in a stellar first half in rolling to a 9-3 win over Dartmouth Friday afternoon at Lakeside Field.
The nine goals are the most by the Wildcats since they notched a 10-0 win at Saint Louis on Sept. 12, 2010. The win was NU's 16th consecutive at home, matching the school record that was first established from 1987-89.
The Wildcats' current home winning streak dates back to a 1-0 victory over Louisville on Oct. 30, 2011, a school Northwestern will attempt to break the record against on Sunday.
Friday's contest was the first of the year for Dartmouth and Northwestern's experience was on display early on as it tallied four goals in the first 11 minutes of the match.
Troncelliti was the first to score an initial shot by Dominique Masters was saved by Dartmouth goalie Ellen Meyer, but Troncelliti was there to put home the rebound at 4:29. Just 64 seconds later, Flens got into the scoring column for the first time as she tipped in an entry from Kelsey Thompson that made it 2-0.
NU's penalty corner unit delivered again at 8:44 as Flens ripped a shot by Meyer off assists from Lisa McCarthy and Charlotte Martin. The deluge continued at 10:52 when Kelley Stump tallied her first goal of the season and the rout was on at 4-0. Flens was credited with an assist on the play.
Dartmouth got one back at 13:41 when Brooke Van Valkenburg scored off a penalty corner with Ali Savage and Janine Leger notching assists.
However, Troncelliti completed her first half hat trick, scoring at 14:37 when she tipped in a feed from Thompson and then again taking a feed from Dominique Masters and scoring one-on-one against new Dartmouth goalie Paige Duffy at 18:28 to make it 6-1.
Rebecca Hu scored for the Big Green at 25:28 to make it a four-goal game, but the Wildcats concluded their incredible opening 35 minutes of play when Stump notched her second of the half from Flens.
The seven-goal outburst was Northwestern's best in a half since scoring seven in the first half of a 12-1 win over Saint Louis on Oct. 4, 2009.
After posting two goals and two assists in the first half, Flens completed her hat trick just 28 seconds into the second stanza as Northwestern was awarded a penalty stroke and the sophomore converted for her team-leading sixth goal of the season.
The Wildcats called off the dogs and managed just one more goal the remainder of the contest as Ashley Bernardi unassisted, making it 9-2. Lindsday von der Luft got to see her first collegiate action in goal in the second half in relief of Maddy Carpenter. The redshirt freshman allowed just one goal on a penalty stroke by Joanne Nazareth at 52:04 and made a save an another stroke attempt by Nazareth in the closing minutes.
Northwestern is back in action at noon Sunday as it hosts 15th-ranked Louisville at Lakeside Field.
