MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- Northwestern officially opened the 2014 season at the Marquette Invitational against Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday night. The `Cats demonstrated strong offense and made 17 shots, but FDU ultimately came away with the 1-0 win.
The `Cats recorded eight shots in the first half to the Knights' four, but the first half ended with no goals.
Redshirt sophomore Rachel Hoekstra broke the scoreless streak early in the second half, finding the back of the net for FDU with a shot outside the box in the 46th minute. Northwestern continued to generate offensive chances with nine more shots through the rest of the match, keeping Fairleigh Dickinson's defense on its toes.
